Hey Mike, tell me again why we let Wes Welker go? Peter, Valley, Ala.

A: Ouch. You really know how to ruin a morning, Peter. The reason was something about concerns over his lack of size. At least that's what was coming out of the Cam Cameron camp at the time of that March 5, 2007 deal (a date that will live in Dolphins infamy). Of course, that was 235 receptions and 11 touchdowns ago, and for a division rival, no less. Even more painful, the second- and seventh-round picks that trade yielded are long gone. Samson Satele (60th overall) can't even get off the bench for the Raiders, and linebacker Abraham Wright is out of the league after spending much of his rookie year on injured reserve and getting waived soon after the Trifecta's arrival. At least the Dolphins were able to ship Satele on to Oakland for an improved fourth-rounder this year that netted Brian Hartline and an additional sixth-rounder that brought tackle Andrew Gardner. It's up to Hartline and Gardner to ease some of the sting from that ill-conceived deal, but there's probably no way to ever offset the absolute stupidity of that move.

Welker is not that good especially when he was with MIA he tend to fumble more and was slower...of course playing with Tom Brady and a genius coach cures all that.

They gave us a 2 draft picks? One was a second rounder? I dunno at the time it seemed like the right move.

at the time it was a good deal. You cant judge a trade based on the idiotic picks made with the player. In retrospect Welker is more dangerous than any receiver we have but u cant judge a trade by more than the picks.

It also helps that Randy Moss is there and makes Welker more dangerous in the slot. He fits their scheme really well.

Welker had a great year with Cassell as QB though many will say it was the Pats system that produced the results.

can we move this freakin thread.. I am so sick and tired of hearing about this moot welker point.. He hasnt been a dolphin for 2 years..

GET OVER IT

Is there a way to block threads

Seriously, how people keep looking at the Welker trade like Miami had a choice in the matter is ridiculous. Miami tendered him at 2nd round level and NE scooped him up with a poison pill contract....why is that so hard to understand???

Yeah because Teams rather have Welker get the underneath stuff rather than let Moss burn them deep constantly.

You do realize he led us in receiving his last year while only starting two games. More receptions than any player has had since he left with 67. As for fumbles Ted Ginn has fumbled at just as much a pace as Welker.

He had 67 receptions with only two starts for us. I think he can start getting some credit himself.

While it didn't turn out very good for us in the end because of our lousy drafting ability, it was the right move at the time. He was going to demand a big contract.

Actually there was no evidence he was going to demand a big contract, his contract is pretty favorable for his production. The trade was solid at the time, in retrospect I would rather have kept him but at the time I was like is NE on crack.

welker was not let go! he was a restricted free agent. the patriots singed him to a very high offer sheet knowing the dolphins could not match it.however losing him would only bring a low compansation pick because he was undrafted.the patriots agreed to recind the offer in exchange for 2 draft picks. the pats got him cheaper than the offer sheet and miami got 2 picks. a regular tactic by the pats. i'm sure the next collective barganing agreement will have some sort of safe gaurd to stop this practice of stealing players with forced trades.

Why do people still want to think "we let him go"?

He was going, he wanted to go and the Patriots made their offer to him in a way that we could not stop him if we wanted to.

He wanted to go, look at his career now. He did not want to play here with Cleo Lemon, He wanted to play WR with Tom Brady.
