Watching Miami Dolphins rookie cornerback Sean Smith this season, you might reasonably assume he is pleased with his progress. Dolphins coach Tony Sparano and defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni certainly have been pleased with Smith as well as fellow rookie CB Vontae Davis.
However, with a likely matchup against another big, physical WR awaiting Smith this week in the Saints' Marques Colston (6-4, 225), it was interesting to hear Smith being somewhat hard on himself this week.
"I haven't been playing as well as I know I can," he said. "For starters, I have yet to get an interception. That's something I take pride in is causing turnovers on defense."
Smith had two picks in the preseason, including ESPN's No. 1 highlight on Sept. 3 at New Orleans (coincidentally enough). That was the one where he reached up with his right hand and tipped the ball to himself as he ran stride for stride with fourth-year man Lance Moore into the end zone.
Since then Smith has six passes defensed, but he has yet to come down with an interception in a game that counts. That drought could come to an end this week against the NFL's No. 1 offense, largely because Drew Brees isn't afraid to throw deep into tight coverage.
"Brees will sometimes take a chance and throw it up," Smith said. "When the ball comes your way, you have to finish. He's going to give his guys a shot. As a secondary, you have to look forward to those situations. You want the ball just as bad as they do."
