Sometimes the perfect move isn’t always a big name. The Miami Dolphins still need help in their linebacker corps and Sean Spence checks all the boxes.
The Miami Dolphins entered 2017 NFL free agency in desperate need of linebacker help. Lawrence Timmons was the big acquisition and a damn good one, but it’s still not enough and he doesn’t help one of their biggest deficiencies at the position.

For years the Dolphins have struggled in coverage against tight ends and running backs because they have lacked a strong cover linebacker. Their greatest effort to add one was Phillip Wheeler, who failed miserably in Miami.

However, there is still a linebacker just sitting out there who is a perfect fit. Former Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans linebacker Sean Spence is an ideal fit for the Phins. Spence was a stud middle linebacker for the Miami Hurricanes in College and showed a ton of promise as a third-round pick in in Pittsburgh before wrecking his knee in the preseason of 2012.

It was likely he would never play again after he tore in ACL and LCL, dislocated his knee cap and damaged the nerve that controls the movement in his lower leg. Nevertheless, he persevered and has seen his level of play continue to drastically improve over the past few seasons.

The college standout has everything the Dolphins are looking for. He’s 26 years old and comes at a bargain price because of the injury. Tackling has never been an issue with Spence and, watching his film, he was outstanding in coverage last season in Tennessee in limited snaps. This could be the steal the Phins need to solidify their front seven. The cherry on top is that he’s a Miami kid and hometown hero.

I have said all off-season we could use Spence for depth

More from article: On top of his tangible abilities both as a tackler and in coverage, he’s also a natural leader. His knee injury was a massive setback, but he’s now ready to peak as a professional football player and really hit his stride. His contributions could turn out to be immeasurable and the story could be incredible. The Dolphins failed to give him a look last year, but can’t make that same mistake in 2017.

Sean Spence | Linebacker | #55
Team: Unsigned Free Agent
Age / DOB: (26) / 6/7/1990
Ht / Wt: 5'11' / 231
College: Miami (FL)
Drafted: 2012 / Rd. 3 (86) / PIT

Free agent ILB Sean Spence visited the Colts.
It's the first team that's been linked to Spence since the start of free agency. The Colts are in the market for an inside linebacker, also visiting with Kevin Minter and Jon Bostic. Spence played just 504 snaps last year, but he is good in coverage. Mar 15 - 6:02 PM

Given the state of our LB corps I would be looking at every FA linebacker out there right now.

I would dig this because it would allow us to focus on 1st round pick as either DE or Safety.

Based on not addressing our need for another starting Guard is Lamp is there you could also take him.

In other words LB could wait till 2nd or 3rd round, operate from a position of strength, not need.

I wish fox would stop posting fanblogs

That part is not correct, he did visit the Dolphins but did not sign here and since its the same front office probably not going to happen unless money demands change on one side.

I think you take the article for what is worth. At this point with our linebacker corps it couldn't hurt to do our homework and at least bring him in to see what he has to offer the team and see if we are close financially.

I'm not saying hes a starter. But hes good depth. Last year all of our backups were undrafted guys who barely deserve to be on a roster. Spence is a guy ago has started and played at least average in that capacity.

Get Spence and Jenkins we need depth with starting experience

I know people see the Fox Sports title but its a fan blog post. Miami hasn't reached out to Spence this offseason and has no interest in him. Nothing against fan blog posts as good opinions can come from anywhere but this isn't "news" as Miami isn't in talks or has shown interest in Spence
