Despite the addition of veteran Matt Moore, the signing of undrafted rookie free agent Pat Devlin and the botch trade for Kyle Orton, it appears the Miami Dolphins aren’t done shopping for quarterbacks.
The Dolphins are still doing their homework on players who play the game’s most important position, and that might lead to a few acorns – like Derek Anderson, Marc Bulger and Jake Delhomme – being picked up later in the exhibition season.
It’s also a possibility the Dolphins might explore trading for backups like Dallas’ Jon Kitna and Pittsburgh’s Dennis Dixon, who is a restricted free agent.
However, a league source said the Dolphins have done “an extensive amount of homework on Terrelle Pryor,” the former Ohio State quarterback, who is training in South Florida. That source said the Dolphins “will likely be in the hunt” for Pryor if he’s allowed to enter the supplemental draft.
Pryor’s status is uncertain because of the supplemental draft, which has been swept up in the lockout and CBA madness. Because of NCAA violations committed during his career as a Buckeye Pryor’s camp says he wouldn’t have been eligible to play college football in 2011.
Their goal is to get Pryor into a camp as soon as possible because the longer his status remains in limbo the less time he has to learn an NFL offense.
According a team source, the Dolphins like Pryor’s height, athleticism and arm strength. However, the team only views him as a developmental project, a third quarterback who would need time to develop.
That kind of designation could prompt the Dolphins to use a late-round pick in the supplemental draft to put a claim in for Pryor. Other teams previously linked to Pryor are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns.
