Devante Parker FTW!
PHOENIX — The Dolphins still need another starting receiver but they might not sign one before the draft.Miami has expressed interest in Michael Crabtree and the team might talk to Greg Jennings during the owners meetings, according to a team source. But “nothing is imminent” and they might want to see how they do in the draft before deciding where to go at the receiver spot.
The Dolphins are considering taking a receiver with the No. 14 pick and that would effect who they sign and how they structure any potential deal. Even if they don’t draft a receiver that high, they might wait to see how the draft shakes out.
DeVante Parker, Dorial Green-Beckham and Jaelen Strong are among the receivers who could be available at No. 14. Amari Cooper and Kevin White are currently projected as top 10 picks.
The Dolphins feel confident that newly signed tight end Jordan Cameron can be an important part of the passing game. But they did expect to have Charles Clay back.
The Dolphins thought they had Clay locked up with the $7 million transition tag. His agent initially asked for $6.8 million a year and $13.8 million over the first two years.
But Clay got much more when the Bills made a stunning offer that included $23 million over the first two years.
More Dolphins tidbits:
– The Dolphins haven’t decided yet whether Dion Jordan will play linebacker or defensive end.
For now, Miami is moving forward with just five linebackers — Koa Misi, Jelani Jenkins, Kelvin Sheppard, Chris McCain and Jordan Tripp. A sixth linebacker, Jake Knott, is also on the roster.
Tannenbaum mentioned four linebackers and pointed out McCain and Sheppard. It’s possible he meant to say five, including Tripp.
“We re-signed Sheppard who has versatility,” vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum said. “We have a guy in Chris McCain that we like a lot. That could be a position we look at between now and Labor Day. But we have four players right now that we can live with.”
– Tannenbaum wouldn’t say whether the Dolphins want to give Tannehill the fifth-year option or a long term extension before the season starts.
“That’s something we’re looking at closely,” he said in terms of Tannehill’s future.
– Even if Billy Turner is locked in a starting guard, the Dolphins still need another one. Tannenbaum said he isn’t concerned at this point despite all the sacks Tannehill has endured the last two seasons.
“Offensive line play is certainly a factor but being balanced as an offense is a factor,” Tannenbaum said. “A lot of factors go in to it. It’s (only) the end of March. We haven’t drafted yet.”
– Tannenbaum said that receiver Mike Wallace was expendable once Miami was able to trade for Kenny Stills.
“It gives him a chance to get a fresh start and for us with Kenny Stills’ production and what we project with him in our offense and with Jarvis Landry, we just thought it was the best fit to do that now,” Tannenbaum said.
