BREAKDOWN WEEK 9- 11/2/08
The Denver Broncos (4-3) returns to the field for the first time since being routed 41-7 by the New England Patriots on Oct. 20. After starting the season 3-0 while averaging 38.0 points, the Broncos have dropped three of their last four, scoring 14.8 points during that stretch. Despite their recent poor play, the Broncos are still in first place in the AFC West after the three other teams in the division all lost last weekend.
The Miami Dolphins (3-4) heads west to Denver to take on the Broncos. The Dolphins are coming off a surprising 25-16 win over the first place Buffalo Bills. Starting 0-2 and getting embarrassed by Arizona showed that Miami still has a long way to go. However, they annihilated the New England Patriots in Mass. and stomped on Denver's rivals, the San Diego Chargers in Miami after coming off a bye week. Miami defeating Buffalo has put them back in competition to win their division. For Miami to go to the Wild Card or playoffs, they must remain consistent, which has been their main problem.
4th, AFC East
350.1 ypg (9th)
246.9 ypg (6th)
103.3 ypg (21st)
333.7 ypg (20th)
1st, AFC West
381.9 ypg (2nd)
236.6 ypg (3rd)
118.3 ypg (12th)
394.6 ypg (30th)
The Passing Game:
The Denver Broncos started off the season on fire. However in recent weeks, the fire has been cooled down. Denver comes out of the bye optimistic about the potential of the offense now that wide receiver Brandon Stokley (concussion), running back Selvin Young (groin) and tight end Tony Scheffler (groin) all could rejoin the team this week.
Although the Dolphins (3-4) are in last place in the AFC East, Dumervil and the Broncos should know better than to overlook them after Miami surprised the division-leading Buffalo Bills 25-16 last Sunday.
The Miami Dolphins overcame a nine-point third-quarter deficit behind a breakout game from Ted Ginn Jr., who had seven catches for 175 yards.
"He just keeps getting better and better," said Chad Pennington, who went 22-of-30 for 314 yards and one touchdown. "You can just tell in his eyes when we're talking about routes that he's just very hungry. He wants to be the guy." Ginn was the ninth-overall pick in the 2007 draft, but was a disappointment last season with 34 catches for 420 yards and two touchdowns. Last Sunday was the first 100-yard receiving game of his career. Ginn provides Pennington with yet another target to work with. Pennington has passed for 1,710 yards -- ninth-most in the NFL -- and his 69.3 completion percentage is second-best in the league.
Advantage: Denver Broncos- More offensive weapons
The Running Game:
Facing the NFL's 30th-ranked rush defense, the Miami Dolphins will also try to get Ronnie Brown going. Brown hasn't run for more than 50 yards in the last three games and has only one of his seven rushing touchdowns during that stretch.he Dolphins have failed to break 100 yards rushing the last three games and five times this season. "We're not where we want to be in that phase of the game," coach Tony Sparano said. "We'll clean it up."
Miami's other two wins came against the Patriots -- who are tied with the Bills atop the East -- and the Chargers. The Dolphins rushed for 216 and 167 yards, respectively, in those victories.
The Denver Broncos have a good running game, ranking 12th in rushing. However, injuries have really hurt this side of the team.
Advantage: Miami Dolphins-3 explosive RB and Wildcat Formation.
The Pass Defense:
The Denver Broncos rank 28th in defending the passing game. The week Secondary has only 2 picks. Teams have burned this Defense many times. Chad Pennington may burn this Secondary with his new found target, Ted Ginn Jr.
The Miami Dolphins rank 25th in defending the passing game. Their Secondary is just as bad as Denver's, which is a huge problem against one of the best passing teams in the league. The Dolphins clearly don't have the skills to stop Cutler and his offensive weapons. Poor tackling has made this Secondary very crappy. However, the Defensive Line has made up for this mediocre Secondary several times.
Advantage: Miami Dolphins- Just Barely, but have stepped up.
The Run Defense:
The Denver Broncos rank 30th against the run, which is not good against one of the most explosive running teams. They have been ran over by decent RB's all season long.
The Miami Dolphins have saved their best play for the best teams on their schedule and won’t hesitate in pounding both Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams on the Broncos’ undersized defensive front seven. Their defense against the run is occasionally pretty good , holding people such LT to short yardage, but people such as Willis McGahee have ran all over them.
Advantage: Miami Dolphins- Denver's Run D is that bad.
Quarterback Jay Cutler has led the Broncos to first place in the AFC West.
Last meeting
The host Dolphins defeated the Broncos, 34-10, in Nick Saban's NFL coaching debut in 2005.
Streaks
Miami has won four of the last five meetings, and leads the all-time series, 10-3-1.
Last week
Quarterback Chad Pennington and the host Dolphins upset the Bills, 25-16. ... The Broncos had a bye.
Keep your eye on ...
Pennington airing it out: Pennington, who completed 22 of 30 passes for 314 yards and a touchdown against the Bills last week, could be poised for another stat-friendly game. His teams are 5-1 when he throws for more than 300 yards. The Broncos rank 28th in pass defense.
Brown running wild: The Broncos are having trouble stopping teams from passing, but they are statistically worse in stopping the run. The Broncos are 30th in rush defense, which is good news for Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown, who has not surpassed 50 rushing yards in his last three games.
Torain's debut: Ryan Torain figured to be in the mix to be the Broncos starting running back in training camp but an elbow injury sidelined him for the first eight weeks. Coach Mike Shahanan refused to put Torain on the IR, and now the rookie out of Arizona State is healthy and could be ready to go against the Dolphins. If not, look for Michael Pittman, who has 197 rushing yards in his past two games, to get the bulk of the carries.
Did you know?
Ted Ginn Jr. had his first career 100-yard game last week and his 175 receiving yards is two fewer than he had in his first six games this season. ... Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter leads the NFL with 10.5 sacks, including 9.5 in his last five games. ... Broncos CB Dre' Bly ranks second among cornerbacks for most interceptions since 1999 with 38.
CHEERS TO A GREAT GAME SUNDAY!
