The Oakland Raiders and the Miami Dolphins have history; that much is for sure. Like the Dolphins, the Raiders are one of the oldest teams in the NFL. The franchise began in 1960 as part of the American Football league (AFL). During the next decade the team became one of the most dominant in the AFL, before the AFL merged with the NFL.Indeed, during the 1960s the Raiders were unbeaten against the Dolphins, winning five and tying one game. During the 1970s, the dominance continued, winning five and losing three. In one of the most memorable meetings between the two teams, Curt Gowdy, the longtime NBC Sports telecaster, called the December 21[SUP]st[/SUP], 1974 meeting the greatest game he had ever seen. His co-host, Al De Rogatis also agreed.

At the time, Don Shula's Dolphins had been to the past three Super bowls in a row, a record at that time, and came into the game against the Raiders with a 11-3 record and an AFC East title. The Raiders, lead by future Hall of Fame head coach John Madden, on the other hand won the AFC West title with a 12-2 record. Without going into the specifics of the game (you can read the article here), the Miami Dolphins unfortunately lost the game 28-26 as the Raiders edged ahead with only 24 seconds left. The game is definitely worth a watch, and even though Miami did lose, is one of the all time football classics.
Throughout the 1980s, the Raiders continued their winning streak against the Dolphins, losing only once. However, once the 1990s rolled by, that streak ended and the team has never been the same since. Miami Dolphins remain unbeaten stretching back to the November 16[SUP]th[/SUP], 2008 meeting between the two sides. Since 1990, the Raiders have only won four times, to the Dolphins twelve wins.
Will that change come Sunday? Being the eternal optimist, I'll hedge my bets and say no. It's the Miami Dolphins versus the Oakland Raiders In London this weekend. Are you ready?

I remember that game it was a Monday night game in '92. Marino threw a pick six but that would be the only points the Raiders scored. The Dolphins pretty much dominated the Raiders that night. Final score was 20-7.

I went to the raiders game in 97. The place was a hell hole. Of the 24 stadiums I have road rallied for the fins, easiest the worse experience of them all. A cop on a motorcycle told me not to wear my Marino jersey into the stadium, and said he was coming to protect me if I wore it.... Most of their fans are gang bangers. Not saying they don't have some good fans.

Any one have the gif of Ronnie brown running over a raider ?

Fins UP!

Loved that game changer, thanks for your first post....

That 1974 game was one for the ages -- billed as Super Bowl 8 1/2. Most experts agreed that Miami and Oakland were the two best teams in football and they put on an epic battle that day with the Raiders finally winning on a pass play where Kenny Stabler was nearly sacked and appeared to just throw the ball to the endzone. As it turned out, a Raider caught the ball in the endzone surrounded by Dolphin defenders. Thus, the game was called the "Sea of Hands" game.

It prevented the Dolphins a chance to return to a fourth straight super bowl and perhaps win a third straight title. Because there was no home field advantage, Miami would have hosted Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship game. I think Miami was better than Pittsburgh that year, but obviously that would have been a tough match even in Miami where the Dolphins home field advantage was a real factor then.

That game haunted me as a kid for years. Not just he sea of hands play but the fact that Benny Malone scored a TD when all they needed to do was run out the clock and kick a field goal to win.

There are losses where you know the other team just played better. Then there are losses where you feel like your team gave the game away. This was a loss that was different in that it felt like the game was stolen from Miami. Very tough one to take. Lost sleep over that game.

This was the only time we have ever beaten the Raiders on MNF. This game, our first win over them on a rainy night in 1970, and the '73 AFC Championship (our only playoff win over them) are VASTLY underrated in the history of this franchise. During our heyday the Raiders were hated in Miami about like we would hate a mixture of the patsies, bills and jest with a little raven thrown in nowadays. A game against the Raiders in the 70's was like mankind's eternal struggle against the forces of evil and darkness.

Sea of hands game ended our dynasty and started the 40 year cycle without a title. We still owe them big time
