It isn't that the Dolphins don't usually run the ball security gauntlet drill, in which one player runs with the ball through a line of teammates thudding him with pads. But when they run it early in practice, as they did Wednesday, that indicates a rise in importance.
``It's urgent, definitely,'' wide receiver Davone Bess said. ``Any time you turn the ball over four times and come out on top, that's unlikely. . . . We're addressing it.''
Against Jacksonville, running back Ricky Williams fumbled three times, losing one, and Bess lost a fumble and got back a muffed punt. The Dolphins have lost nine of 23 fumbles and have a minus-five turnover margin, tied for 13th in the AFC and 24th in the league. Nobody realistically expected the Dolphins to replicate last year's NFL-low 13 turnovers and league-leading turnover margin, but minus-five makes coach Tony Sparano grumpy.
``That's a routine we do week in and week out,'' Bess said. ``That's something we've got to do, especially me. We've got to do a better job of holding onto the ball.''
