Thunder Rolls Through Miami
By GREG JACKSON, FHAP Sports Writer
February 8, 2007

MIAMI (FHAP) – Many days have past since the leaving of former Miami Dolphins head coach, Nick Saban. Recently Cam Cameron, former San Diego offensive coordinator, joined the Dolphins as their new head coach. With Cam Cameron arrives a new GM who hopes to bring the winning tradition back to Miami.

Miami’s new hire remains a mystery, Mat Thunder, with his very little experience at general manager position. Although Thunder worked under the Colts general manager last year which lead to a Super Bowl win, it’s remains uncertain as if Thunder can lead a team on his own to the Promised Land.

“In order to elevate this team to the playoffs, a great defense and stellar quarterback would be needed. I’ve been blessed enough to have the best defensive end in the league, Jason Taylor, and one of the top linebackers in the league in Zach Thomas. These guys have been loyal to the Dolphins organization for many years and for them to receive a chance to show their stuff in the playoffs seems like a given,†stated Thunder in a recent press conference.

“Cam [Cameron] has already stated he’ll work with the player’s talents when it comes to running the offense, all he [Cam Cameron] told me was to bring him good players with good attitudes.â€Â

With huge cap numbers, Thunder hopes to restructure a few contracts including Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas, Daunte Culpepper, and Chris Chambers. “Although these players are worth the money, I’m sure they will put the organization’s needs in front of money, if they wish not to restructure, it’s fine, but we’re hoping to improve the team and we can only do that with more money.â€Â

A dreary quarterback play the past 7 years have caused Miami to drop to the middle of the pack, falling behind 3 time Super Bowl Champions and division rivals, the New England Patriots. Miami went through three quarterbacks last year between Daunte Culpepper, Joey Harrington, and Cleo Lemon, which lead to Pro Bowl receiver Chris Chamber’s worst year since arriving in the NFL.

The offensive line hasn’t improved since the beginning of last year, although Thunder has went on to say he hopes to retain most starters that have shown their worthiness to keep chemistry within the offensive line.

“Many people don’t realize how important chemistry is, Marvin Harrison and Peyton Manning are the best quarterback/receiver combination in the NFL, because of the chemistry these possess because they’ve been together for so many years. If we hope to improve our offensive line, we can’t break them up every year. I’ll hope to improve the offensive line through the draft and free agency to an extent.â€Â

Although Miami has many problems within the roster, their defense remains one of the top in league with Defensive Player of the Year Jason Taylor and Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Thomas leading the way. With a few improvements in the secondary, this defense could be the best in the league. With a solid wide receiver group and an improving Ronnie Brown, who just had his first 1,000 yard season last year, things aren’t looking too dark in Miami.

“I know I’m a little unknown with this world, but I’ve watched the Dolphins since the Dan Marino era. I know the pride that the Dolphins fans possess and not to mention how much they want this team to win. Whether we’re in New York, California, London, or even in Miami, I hope to bring the winning attitude that the Dolphins have been wanting for year.â€Â

With Miami’s 6-10 season last year, things appear better than they look. With the number nine pick in this year’s NFL Draft, Thunder hopes to bring the winning tradition to Miami from September through February.

Two Days Until Free Agency Begins
By JIM BLEDMAN, FHAP Sports Writer
March 2, 2007

MIAMI (FHAP) – Free Agency is only a few days away for the FHGML as many teams are doing a little bit of spring cleaning, although the weather doesn't show any signs of spring. The Miami Dolphins GM, Matt Thunder, has been at work like any other GM, making trades and cuts, readying himself for free agency and the draft.

Matt Thunder has brought together a new team, while keeping some of the major players from last year. Although the team is only half complete, Thunder looks to improve the team through free agency then grab a few kids in the draft through needs and by talent.

You won't be seeing Joey Harrington in a Dolphins uniform anymore, Joey was immediately sent to the Houston Texans as a way to trade up from the #9 pick to the #8 pick. Joey was well known as being a typical QB for Miami and another QB that has been struck by the infamous Dan Marino curse. Thunder brought in Tampa Bay quarterback, Bruce Gradkowski as a replacement and someone to compete with Culpepper.

Ricky Williams sent himself packing to Europe three years ago and the league sent him packing to Canada last year, this time Miami sent him packing to Denver. Williams was sent to Denver for Mike Bell and a 3rd round draft pick. While Thunder has the utmost respect for Williams as a player, his off field problems outweighed his talent. Thunder brought Bell who, as a rookie, carried the ball 157 times for 677 yards and 8 touchdowns. He is more than able to fulfill Williams shoes as Ronnie Brown's back up.

The receiving team received an overhaul, Miami sent away Marty Booker due to his cap, Derek Hagan, and Randy McMichael for his off field antics. Thunder brought in Philadelphia receiver, Reggie Brown to the team as well as New York tight end, Jeremy Shockey. Brown is a young player looking to rise to the top, as an Eagle he brought in 46 passes for 816 yards while hauling in 8 touchdowns. Putting Brown next to Chambers means the outcome should be golden. Cameron will mold Shockey into the next Antonio Gates.

"Shockey may have caused problems with the media in the past few years, but we felt that he'd be comfortable with a new situation in Miami. We're happy to have Shockey here and we're sure that, as a U of Miami alumni, he's just as happy," stated Thunder in a recent press conference.

Miami's offensive line seemed to be the source of all the problems last year, they never seemed to give enough time for the quarterbacks to make plays or the running backs to gain yards. After releasing many linemen including Jeno James and Bernie Anderson, Thunder brought in tackle Marvil Smith and guard John Welbourn. Thunder mentioned that Carey and Hadnot are the only expected returning starters. On the flip side, Miami's defensive line stayed the same, Miami had to let go of Kevin Carter due to cap reasons, leaving Roth as the projected starter next to Jason Taylor.

Miami brought in a few new faces in the linebacker and secondary as well. With Crowder and Zach Thomas filling two linebacker spots, Miami brought in linebacker Michael Boley from Atlanta. Boley, a two year veteran, turned a lot of heads the past two years, grappling 85 tackles, 3 sacks, and forcing a fumble. Boley also picked off two passes to add his to accomplishments. Also arriving at Miami from New England is cornerback Ellis Hobbs, who has made 88 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 13 pass defenses in his two year career. Hobbs started most of his career next to Asante Samuel and becomes a valuable asset to the Miami Dolphins.

Free agency has been speculated all over the country the past week, with rumors of various players going to different places. Miami's GM, Matt Thunder, spoke in a recent press conference on the matter.

"We're going to into free agency, bring in quality guys, while including the quantity in there too. We have 28 active players on our roster, with 9 draft picks, that means we have 37 players, meaning we should sign about 14 players or so. I'm not going to go into detail on who we hope to pursue, but whomever that is, we're going to make the best decision for the Miami Dolphins football team."
