But it wasn’t all that long ago that Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert feared his town’s status as an event destination would be lost -- perhaps for good.

During the most contentious days of the Dolphins’ stadium renovation fight, there was the underlying threat that, should the county or state not pitch in, the team might someday move — if not with Stephen Ross as owner, perhaps his successor.
Gilbert, the city’s mayor since 2012, took that threat seriously.
“I worried some, because sometime people don't necessarily know what they have until it's gone, and I never want that to be the case,” Gilbert said recently. “It's interesting that we like to call ourselves a world-class community. To be a world-class community, you have to have the Miami Dolphins, you have to have the Miami Heat. You also have to have culture and the arts. You have to have all of those things. It's a composite. It's not a singular picture.”
In the end, Ross decided to rehab the aging facility with private funds. The price tag: roughly a half billion dollars.
Two years later, the building’s transformation is stunning. Four spires and a 14-acre canopy will give the largely residental community a distinct skyline.

But the job’s not done. Far from. Some 400 workers are on site, round-the-clock, to beat the Sept. 1 deadline — when the Dolphins host the Titans in their preseason finale.
It’s an unfathomably complex and time-intensive project that team officials say only has a chance of being finished on time because of Ross’ commitment and real estate expertise. But there’s no guarantee it will be, particularly if the weather doesn’t start cooperating.
That’s a short-term concern, however. No matter how long it takes, the stadium will get done, and ensure the Dolphins — and major events — are in Miami Gardens for years to come.

Why is it every time I read this, I think to myself "Setting the stage for more excuses for the failures of the franchise". What an embarrassment it will be when we are not able to play on our home field in the fall. God, I miss Joe Robbie!

Are you seriously complaining?

Naw bro. Construction never has any delays because of stuff like weather, and South Florida is known for year round stable weather especially during the summer.

I don't think we would ever leave the city of Miami. There is too much tradition and history. You think about the 70s, 80s and most of the 90s we were serious contenders

The engineering and planning required for some of these stadium construction is mind boggling! I understand the deadline required to get this thing done. I just ask that safety in no way is compromised/glossed over to accomplish it.

Huh??? I thought Ross paid for renovations.

If I remember right, he is but he's getting some huge tax breaks on the stadium/land/etc. for the next however long to make up for it. It's still money not going to the city one way or another.

AFAIC, they could raze the whole city and start again: Outrageous crime rate index is 8 while the natl avg is 100, (the higher the better), more murders per capita than NYC, 14 known gangs in city, registered sex offenders 17% higher than natl avg, overall crime 61% higher than national average, 24% of residents with incomes below the poverty level, etc. Why Ross chose to invest in renovating the stadium vs putting it somewhere along the fringe of the Everglades in Broward or Palm Beach County is beyond me.

Yeah they probably would have bolted. Ross has ties to AIG and AIG was a force in the LA NFL team venture.

But they got stadium renovations so who cares this is old news they aren't going anywhere now

Planning to move to Miami in the next few years. Glad they stayed, might have had to reconsider if they moved.

I have never renovated a stadium before but it looks to me like they are about to hit the final stretch.

The reason they are interviewing the Mayor of Miami Gardens is because they are not in the city of Miami. Sun life is in Miami Dade County, but not within the city of Miami. So, technically they already left the city.
