Copper a valuable commodity

<Mar> Copper, a restricted free agent, is generating pretty solid interest from teams such as Miami, writes ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli. Because he originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent in 2004, Copper would not cost any compensation for a team that successfully executed an offer sheet with him.

Copper averaged an impressive 16.7 yards per reception in 2006 and scored a touchdown every 7.6 catches. He can return kickoffs, might be able to return punts in a pinch, and plays on all the special teams coverage units.

His scouting report from ESPN Insider:

Grade: 63

Comment:
Copper has good hands and above-average speed and athleticism. He is effective on kick coverage teams and is a reliable return specialist. He can be impressive with his ability to snatch balls away from his body and make tough catches. He has some vertical skills and, when he finds a crease, can turn a short pass into a long gain. But Copper still is somewhat raw and inexperienced. He isn't very elusive in the open field and doesn't provide many big plays. He doesn't seem to have great route awareness or the ability to recognize defenses and make adjustments on the move. He has good bulk but isn't very tall. He isn't much of a threat on third downs or in red-zone and jump-ball situations.

==========================

He wasn't really a vital piece of the Saints offense, but sounds like he may be able to make a name for himself in Miami. Who knows, just some news on the Wr front that I found. We'll see where this leads....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

its not much for depth but finding a player to BE a player.

Copper was a decent WR once Joe Horn went down. Living in Alabama we see all the Saints games and my brother is a big Saints fan so he gave me the scoop on Copper when this story first broke. He made a few good plays last year but it's hard to tell if it was a product of him being a good WR or Drew Brees being a phenomenal QB. The Saints have let Stallworth and Horn go in the past 2 years and they have an RFA tender on Copper. So I don't know if that means they have faith in their young guys to get it done (Henderson, Copper, Colston) If that's the case the Saints might match any offer we make and not let us sign Copper.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him in Miami though. He showed some flashes of brilliance in New Orleans and he has decent speed and hands. He caught that Hail Mary pass against the Cowboys I think it was.

tahst thei thing, we need a game breaker at WR speed wise.

I think Cooper would come here to mainly play special teams and contribute once in awhile on offense.

It was against Atlanta. 48 yards at the end of the 1st half.

He would be a great addition to our poor offense. We should get him!

He has no similarity to Wes Welker...

Think again:

"He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent in 2004."
"He can return kickoffs, might be able to return punts in a pinch, and plays on all the special teams coverage units."
"Has good hands and above-average...athleticism. He is effective on kick coverage teams and is a reliable return specialist. "He has good bulk but isn't very tall."
"Averaged an impressive 16.7 yards per reception in 2006"

Sounds like a lot of what was good about Wes Welker, plus speed and the ability to score. Probably not as good a route runner or third-down receiver , but that can be taught.

We certainly need a return guy. If we were to get him, it might put the cabash on Ginn.
