Anyone who reads my posts know I am a huge Roth fan due to his domination at the POA. His presence on the strong side dictated where teams would run the ball, (ie. away from Roth) as well as forcing the TE to stay in, (freeing up Bell to play SPY) For those that don't know having a safety playing spy is huge, just ask Polamalu and the Steelers.

Here is a video C.Williams highlights during thursdays game.

1st Play - Miami Nickle, TB 3WR/1TE Single Back
JT gets owned by K.Winslow(82TE) in a way no pro should be by a 240lb TE, almost looks like they are dancing.... Porter punched by RT.

2nd Play - Miami Base 3-4, TB I-Form Weak(TE in motion)
Run up the middle, JT has a small opportunity but gets chipped by B.J. Askew(35FB) FB. Porter blocked by 82 but had no chance.

3rd Play - Miami Nickle, TB 3WR/1TE Single Back
JT slips the cut block(82) but play is away from him. Porter blocked by LT and can't recover.

4th Play - Miami Nickle, TB 3WR/1TE Single Back
Porter blocked by LT and gets a hand on Williams. JT non factor.

5th Play - Miami Base 3-4,TB 3WR/1TE Single Back
Eric Walden punched by (82), but play went away from him. Moses lets himself get drawn inside when he should have played contain. Gets chipped by M.Urrutia(19WR).

6th Play - Miami Base 3-4, TB 3WR/1TE Single Back
JT stood up by J.Stevens(TE) and is a no factor. Porter has no chance.

I dont have much of a problem with a WOLB not being so great vs. the RUN. I do have a problem with a 3-4 defence that plays it's base def. and nickle with two of them. If you are going to play Sam you gotta smash their TE in the face, and that is neither JP's or JT's thing. One other thing that is important to note. Tampa Bay did a great job of going into a single back, 3 WR/1 TE set to exploit Miami's nickle package. The LT/RT would handle Porter, the TE would hande JT. Miami made the adjustment in the secong half, as you can see by play 5 and 6, and left their base defence in. Sadly they still got owned.

I think we can all agree that Miami is better then how they played on Thursday. The worry is that not having that run stuffing LB will force Sporano and CO. to have to come up with different schemes to make things work. Usually that means pressing the box with your safeties. That in turn opens up the big runs and deep passing game the Dolphins didn't allow last year, much because of what Roth allowed Miami to do fundamentally.

For some reason can't put spaces in, impossible to read...

To be honest, I believe we need a better presence up the middle from the NT position. You see Ferguson getting pushed around a lot in that clip. Same case as last year in the playoffs. Everyone looked bad, not just the OLB. I saw Langford who most are crediting with a positive game, lose containment which led to a big gain.

I think your concerns are valid. I'm seeing more and more holes emerge that I didn't think were there to begin with.

Ha, is this what you were trying to say?

i like the work you put into this post, but since when has it not been obvious the JT is not a strong side linebacker? were going to suffer big time if taylor has to be more than a situational pass rusher.

Agreed. Hopefully this will open the eyes of some fans who think Roth is useless as a LB because his pass rush seemed lacking the last couple years neverminding that he played with a pulled groin both years.

We NEED that guy big time. JT getting owned by the likes of Winslow is sad. Roth would have smashed the guy.

I think the most obvious thing that needs to be corrected is maintaining the lanes in backside pursuit. I don't no why, but the OLB's kept taking to shallow of a pursuit line where they would pin themselve directly in the tangled mess of the OL+DL allowing the runners to take a simple back cut for good yardage. This shallow pursuit by the backers and themgetting tangled up inthetrenches give these cutback runners plenty of open space to go one on one with the defender. That is a battle the RB will win almost every time. This needsto be cleaned up really quick as we will be facing a lot of these quick cut-back runners this year.

Thanks for breaking that down.

I have been trying to tell people here that we are going to miss Roth in this defense but no one seems to listen. I think it has something to do with the player JT used to be as opposed to the player that he is now. Matt Roth is a 26 year old OLB who is a great run stuffer that does multiple things in this defense. One of those things he learned quickly at the position is how to contain the end. He is such a physical force he can also get inside and use his strength. Go back and watch the replay of Thursday nights game. It is evident that Roth has a special purpose in this defense that no one up until now can actually fill. Add to that the 5 sacks he had last season and the fact that he just transitioned from DE to OLB in one season. The guy only can get better at the position.

Believe all the trade hype and the we don't need Roth talk but it is plain to see....... We MISS him folks.

Matt Roth anyone? He's our run stuffer. He won't be traded. I think he will be ready for opening day.

Agreed, but in preseason that is how the coaching staff has used him. Miami needs someone else in there, and if it isn't Roth, then they better start bringing some guys in.

PS - Thanks canesandbulls for helping me out there:thanks:

Now we begin the Matt Roth apologist tour, as if none of us who have watched football for decades can decipher his hidden value.

It's awesome to be a conspiracy. No requirements whatsoever. Just allow public cynicism to take over. You've been places and done things you never imagined and can't remember. Likewise, every major gain allowed by the Dolphin defense, even during preseason, would have been prevented, and likely reversed into turnover or better, by the great Matt Roth.

Disregard that he primarily arm wrestles in a stand up position, often preoccupied to maintain that situation while the ball carrier flashes past. We allowed 4.2 yards per carry, a subpar number for a playoff team and a half yard worse than the Jets, if you want a reference point. Only managing the lead early kept the total yards allowed down, since opponents were in catchup mode late and averaged slightly more than 24 rushes against us. Frankly, that was horrid strategy and verified how weak our schedule was. A competent group of foes would have rushed several times more per game, on average, against the Miami defense.

If Ronnie Brown had great instincts then he would be unanimously hailed with great instincts. If Matt Roth were a terrific player he would be ceremonied as such, instead of all the doubts since 2006, and posts like CK's the other day, saying this defense has moved beyond Matt Roth.

If you think you've discovered something, look again. That's what I'm saying. I'll trust my own eyes and consensus above a Matt Roth fan, desperate for others to love and appreciate Roth equally. What was JFK's famous summation in the 1960 debates, something like, "I always have trouble recognizing my positions as stated by Mr. Nixon." I don't recognize Matt Roth when he's described as anything other than limited and mediocre.

Roth & Soliai have the skills to dramatically improve our run defense and we'll suffer considerably if they aren't in there.

maybe what Miami needs is two players alot like Tim Bowens and Manny Fernadez.

I agree with the original poster. Im kinda scared if Roth doesnt come back healthy. While some people mentioned that our Defensive success was going to lie in how good our pass rush is, I think stopping the run is a #1 concern. I know Parcells knows this so who knows, we might trade for somebody if they dont feel that Roth will be back
