Consider this, since 2004; Miami has had 7 coaches and 4 GMs. And every new coach and GM hired has tried to practically rebuild the team for one reason or another. Wannstedt leaves and Saban rebuilds. Saban leaves and Cameron rebuilds. Saban leaves and Parcells rebuilds. Parcells leaves and Ireland re-tools. Sparano leaves and Philbin and Ireland start to rebuild. Then Ireland leaves and Dennis Hickey starts to rebuild. Who knows who's coming or going next.
The problems with this are:
A, there is no continuity from season to season.
B, there is no culture and most importantly,
C, no set plan to get things moving.
And now all these usually lead to the bigger a problem --how to rebuild. In the first year or two the rebuilder usually overturns the roster and builds the team through the draft or draft the best players available and get playmakers on your team. The first is the route that most teams go that includes our beloved Dolphins. It's my opinion that this approach is dangerous because it leaves you in a position of reaching for players that may be available later, or passing up on great talent in another position just to fill a current need with a player that may or may not pan out.
As that tends to leave you on the outside looking in for an actual playmaker. You don’t draft every single year for BPA at a position of need. You have to find “Play Makers”. This team needs “play makers” on all sides of the ball. Constant drafting for needs is the main reason this team is where it is right now. The great Don Shula couldn’t coach this team to the playoffs, hell you could dig up Lombardy and the result would be the same. You need play makers more than you need great or good coaches. A wise man once said “you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken …. “, you get the point.
Look at the whole team, this is the first time in my 31 years of being a Dolphins fan that I did not see a touchdown pass of over 30 yards. No running score over 30, I don’t even recall a 20 yards td run. No Punt return to the house, no KO returns to the house seriously? We’re lucky we are 7-7!
