Miami's Current Cap Status

Uh, we'd release Frerotte which is 7 million dollars.

We'd restructure JT and ZT, JT of which was 6 million (I think).

We have money to spend

Packers at 35 million

And that's maybe even before Favre retires. And they can't afford Walker?

True, releasing Gus would free up some space, but he would only be released if we sign a big FA QB. The new FA QB would take up at least as much cap space as Gus, if not more, leaving us with not much to spend after you pay the rookies.

walker just had an ACL injury...i think they want to see how he plays befoer giving him the big bucks.

come on, Saban is the King of Smokescreens, he'll leave us at a respectable cap number so that we can at least play around in FA, but dont be suprised if he has restructured contracts for JT, ZT and Kevin Carter, not to mention Frerottes walking papers in a file on his desk just waiting to be faxed in to the league. we all know he is going to wait until the last possible moment to show his hand, this is another way of doing just that.

I don't think they want to afford Walker, he's only ever had one good year with a QB, who has made a career out of making average receivers, 1,000 yard receivers.

Walker wants out of Green Bay because he overpriced himself last year, acted stupid, they wouldn't budge, Favre complained, Walker went to camp, and then he blew his knee out last season. Now he has to prove himself again. I still fail to see how he deserves "T.O. money."

actually the new FA can get a large signing bonus and the team can spread that bonus equally among the years of the deal. Most of the contracts are not intened to run the life of the deal, most get re-worked or the player is released before the back end of the contract starts to escalate.

Brees can sign 6 year $50 million $15 million guarenteed money. So the bonus will be divided by 6 years or $2.5 mill, and his annual salary will be relatively small, but will start escalating after year 3 or 4. Giving us short term relief, but we will have tough decisions to make down the road.

Packers organization is just like the Saints they are dirt cheap with everything. They should go get some quality players for their crappy defense. If we had that money the things we would do....

So Frerotte's $4.5 mill will be enough to sign Brees in the short term.

Cool. Thanks for the breakdown. So, what about other high priced FA's? How competitive will we be?

The SB can only be pro-rated over 5 years now. Which means a 3 mill hit every year for his bonus....
