If he can get an increased hang time of over a second, why worry as much about direction?

Besides, I'm sure he can change the dircetion he kicks in to to "place" the ball where it needs to go.

Sorry I'm a few days late on this, but directional punting is actually pretty important, IMO. Depending on where the ball is snapped between the hash marks, the punter being able to accurately get some lateral movement on the ball can be pretty important for coverage schemes. It's obviously also a pretty big deal when trying to dump a punt out of bounds inside the 20 or when you just can't take a chance on a return.

The good news is that it's something that's extremely coachable.
