No matter what the answers are, what Riley is doing now is in no way despicable, which is one of many such descriptions that accurately and fairly describe Saban at this point.

I'd start with liar and fraud. Saban surely has been proven to be both.
For weeks after reports surfaced that the University of Alabama was interested in him and he in them, he denied it. Actually, he rebutted the reports, saying he had no plans to leave the Miami Dolphins. An elaborate no-comment would have been perfectly understandable. Coaches consider their professional options all the time. And they should.

But Saban chose not to do the dance; he seems to consider himself above the truth if it suits him. So he lied, repeatedly and arrogantly at that. One day after another when it was obvious the flirtation with Alabama was serious, Saban would look at the questioners as if they were vermin who should take him at his word......

You gotta love Wilbon! :D
Good read. Of course his articles are always good.

He does say something that I have been saying for two days, but haven't heard a lot of national media heads pointing out. Saban is really going to struggle recruiting in the SEC.
- He can't successfully recruit in South Fla for at least two years.
- He won't be able to recruit well in Alabama head to head vs Tommy Tuberville.
- He's have a very tough time in Mississipi and the Panhandle vs LSU and UF.
And all for the same reason. Those coaches are going to be sitting down with the recruits considering 'Bama, and thier parents, and reminding them about Saban's track record.

It's going to be very easy to paint Saban as a liar because....well..... he is.

I like Wilbon, he's a good writer and Saban definitely is a liar and fraud.

On a side note, Riley is nowhere near on Saban's level. He's been committed to Miami and has brought us success. The Heat need something drastic to turn the year around and what he's doing is positive. While he's recovering from the surgeries he's going to focus on his gm duties and figure out a way to get Antoine Walker the hell out of town and bring in someone who can help the team.

Yeh, I've been making some of those same points too. I really think Saban just shot himself in the foot with the way he handled things here in Miami. Every good recruit with NFL aspirations will be hesitant to sign up for a 4-5 years committment if there's a possibility (or a probability) that Saban will jet after 3-4 years. That means some of the best recruits will go elsewhere.

As a result, I find it hard to imagine that Alabama will compete for a national championship under Saban. I see them as a perennial 10 win team. No better than what Mike Shula did.

NawlinsBucFan, I believe I choose the one in the middle....

I agree with you, i am from an SEC school and the way we recruit the southern usa, along with UGA, LSU, Auburn, Tennessee (coming back) and now up and comers Arkansas, Nick would forever have the stigma of a coach that is always thinking of himself and not the kids and that at a moments notice of lossing he is going to leave you. So why play for someone that can even man up and tell the truth. But claims he always does.

Nice thought ... but - ummm, NOPE ...

Parents aren't going to think twice about sending their kids to Alabama ... to a proven winner in the SEC -- best conference in college football - bar NONE [and I'm a Big East Guy]

We can burry him all we want -- I would have left as well ... as it was too sweet a deal to turn down .... 8 years GUARANTEED for an EASIER job and lifestyle -- who are you trying to kid here. Folks can talk all the smack they want about loyalty, integrity, etc --- but 90% of the same folks here would do the same thing at their current job

I give him 3 years ... maybe less before he is contending in the SEC, as most reports stating that Shula left him in a fairly decent situation ...

I don't love Saban ... nor do I appreciate the fact that he left --- but I do 100% understand the 'why's' to his chosing ALA over our PHINS ...

Good luck ... and be GONE ! NEXT !!

8 years garuanteed that he wont be fired...That doesnt mean he wont leave them hanging in 3 years when he wants to find his heart again

I don't think anyone is faulting him for the decision he made. It was obvious to him that he wouldn't cut it in the pros, so he took the money elsewhere while it was there. The thing everyone is upset about is the way he acted like an arrogant scumbag to the media and lied at basically every press conference. If he had said that he was considering his options all along, there wouldn't be this much outrage.

Simply put he chose Alabama because he knew he was going to fail in the NFL. Do you honestly believe this would have even been an issue if the Phins had won 10 games and were in the playoffs.
Truth is, he bailed out because he realized that the NFL is SIGNIFICANTLY tougher than college football (that includes the SEC). Winning in the NFL didn't come easy for Nick as it does for Mangini. That is the primary reason why he bailed out. Let's not overanalyze this.

I think Alabama will be a homerun with locals in Alabama...He'll def. recruit the best of the class in Alawama..but that's about it. It's hard enough for them trying to recruit out of Alabama..now it'll be worse.

Sorry, whether he wanted to leave or not is not the issue, its how it was handled in such a classless, fraudulent way that is the issue.

Wilbon, Shula and even LeBatard nailed this right on the head.

What will matter to religious southern baptist parents regarding Saban is his lack of loyalty to anywhere he's worked at, the frequency of his desire to change jobs, and the dishonesty he has displayed in his conduct.

He won't get to year 3 in Alabama if he loses to Auburn twice, little Nikki won't be able to stand the heat in Alabama if that is the case, and he will be looking for his next stop.

The recruiting thing was actually discussed on around the horn yesterday. Some points brought up were his record of turning around franchises, and the number of people he recruited making it to the NFL. Those are two selling points. And isn't Saban the ultimate seller? he left Toledo. He left MSU. He left LSU. People were saying, "In Saban we trust" in Miami.

He was treated as a rock star in Alabama. Trust me, I think he'll do ok.

Please don't remind me, I may never live that down. Have to go puke again now.

This whole fiasco will be forgotten within the year.... we all move on.
LSU killed ND with many of the players he brought to LSU....
He will succeed.....just not in the NFL
