NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock is a big fan of Sergio Kindle -- so much so, he rates the Texas outside linebacker prospect ahead of Alabama's Rolando McClain and believes the Dolphins should pick him with the No. 12 overall pick of the draft.

"I think if you're trying to look, and I hear a lot of people talking about McClain versus an outside linebacker, to me in that 3-4 the outside linebacker is more important," Mayock said, thus agreeing with what Dolphins In Depth wrote about three weeks ago. "If Sergio Kindle is there at No. 12, I'd pull the trigger. I think he's an explosive edge rusher and I think he would instantly upgrade that team.

"They probably need a nose tackle. I think you can get one a little bit later in the draft and obviously the same thing at wide receiver. I really believe that depending on who's sitting there at 12, that's what they're also looking at. Kindle is an explosive playmaker on defense. Is there anybody at 12 that can help us on offense. I don't think there's any way in the world Dez Bryant gets there. So if he's gone, does another wide receiver warrant consideration at 12? And I think that's some of the discussion that's going on right now."

Mayock says he has Mclain rated as the No. 17-best player in the country. He has Kindle at No. 7.

Sergio to me still has a lot of untapped potential. He was a great LB going to Texas, but didn't show much until his junior year; where he excelled as a pass rusher. He struggled a bit moving to DE against the run. The big thing that bugs me about Kindle is his defense against the run. I saw a couple games, including the national title game, where he looked almost unblockable on passing downs, but couldn't do squat against the run.

Of course, I'm always leery of Longhorns. I've seen way too many this decade be very disappointing.

i like Mike Mayock and IMO i would rather take Graham over Kindle. i am praying that Dez Bryant falls to us at 12 though

interesting....
Maylock knows his $#!%...

Yeah... except he "Love, love love'd" the Pat White pick.

I agree though, in the 3-4 OLB is far more important than ILB and as bad as Crowder/Ayodele are, they're better than JT/No one.

We go OLB without a doubt.

This is exactly why I've been saying Graham is not going to be our pick at #12. He's not worth the pick.

I've been saying JPP for a while now, but if he is gone, I could certainly see Kindle being the pick. Even if McClain is there.

jeez mayock...first earl thomas over eric berry and now kindle as the 7th rated player on your board...

:bobdole:

Hoops, i lovee your analysis, and agree with you time and time again, but maybe Mayock has a point-i mean it is his job.

JPP is not going to be our pick at 12 and the only way he's already gone is if Al Davis has another relapse of stupidity right before their time is up.

JPP is all about potential, potential players are for the late part of the first for teams with no glaring weaknesses. Project potential players are not for the 1st round at all, JPP is talented but still more potential then production.

maybe he does...i'm a mayock guy myself...but kindle at #7 overall baffles me and eric berry not top 5 talent???

 Yeah, though I feel him on the Thomas over Berry, but when he threw the Kindle as his #7 "overall"???? I did :bobdole: as well  :err::ponder: Man, I tried to be open-minded about giving Mayock the benefit of the doubt for a second there but :bobdole:

i dont think Kindle is the 7th best prospect, but I cant ignore his explosive pass rush in that Title game. I mean Ill never forget the play where he stopped at the line because it looked like he had the TE in coverage. When the TE stayed in to block, it literally looked like he was shot out of a cannon from a dead stop. How is Kindle vs the run though?

kindle doesn't have an array of pass rush moves or use his hands well...

he runs around people a lot...that won't work in the pros...

doesn't sustain leg drive doesn't get off blocks all that well...i like him more than ricky sapp who looks lost at times and kindle has significant upside but he's a project to me...

as for eric berry i've seen that kid play fs before he moved to ss...he's top 5 bpa easy imo...

I agree for the most part with Mayock though I would stipulate that right now the guy would more probably be Graham or Griffen than Kindle but then again, I do have Kindle up there. Despite the misgivings that Richard and Simon have expressed about Sergio, I think he has three things that you can't coach. He is (1) explosive at the point of attack, (2) he has a great burst to the football, and (3) he is a very enthusiastic player. If through the Combine and your background checks you discover that he's also got (4) a clean medical history, (5) a spotless character and (6) a tireless work ethic...that's a pretty high pick. You can iron out technique issues and even add strength and leg drive to a guy...but a guy either has those 6 things or he doesn't, you usually can't just give them to him.

well any guy transitioning to 3-4 end is a bit of a project imo. they all have concerns in one way or another. to me the Phins would lean more to a Derrick Morgan type who can do a bit of everything, although his body reminds me so much of Merling it bothers me. if he starts hitting the same buffets as Philip, hes not playing 3-4 olb.
