It was a community.
A group of Broncos coaches all raised their families in the same Denver-area neighborhood when Mike McCoy worked as offensive coordinator. Along with his family, Adam Gase’s was among them. There were cookouts and hangouts. At times, McCoy’s daughter babysat younger kids on the block.
The two men grew close over those years.
That hasn’t changed with time.
The former colleagues will face each other Sunday for the first time as opposing head coaches. McCoy, at the helm of the Chargers, and Gase, of the Dolphins, have not lost touch, most recently speaking in the past week, McCoy said Thursday. One conversation this spring contributed to the Chargers being a more formidable opponent for the Dolphins this weekend.
It involved Matt Slauson.
The Chargers had interest in the former Bears interior lineman, who became a free agent in May shortly after the draft. Gase spent 2015 as the offensive coordinator in Chicago before accepting his current position in Miami. He was plenty familiar with Slauson, who moved from guard to center midseason.
McCoy wanted a reference.
He knew who to call.
“It was interesting because I was probably about five hours away from calling him and recommending Matt to him,” Gase said in a conference call with San Diego reporters this week. “Obviously, we are fortunate enough to have the center that we have on our team (Pro Bowler Mike Pouncey). Matt’s one of those guys you just want in your building, no matter what position he is playing. …
