Article is kind of interesting and you can gain some insight into what has made McDaniel successful. Seems to share the traits of a fair bit of professional sports coaches. Played the sport. Was not very good. But overachieved relative to their underlying athletic ability. Combination of hard work, grit, and smarts. Granted, he still kind of stunk if he had to walk on at Yale, barely make team, and didn't have any catches. Not really the point. To get to where he did, relative to his size and underlying athletic ability, an over achievement. Belichick was similar. Played for Wesleyan. Didn't even sniff the NFL.

I played football from the age of 7 through high school and have coached the game on a few different levels. When you say McDaniel “kind of stunk” due to the fact that he had to walk on at Yale, I couldn’t disagree more.

Obviously, he lacked the ideal size and skill to be a top flight college football player but it still takes a lot of talent and a **** ton of determination to earn a spot on a college football roster. Not only that, when you do it as a walk-on, it’s a tremendous grind as you spend countless hours being a punching bag and tackling dummy on the scout team.

I love the fact that McD was determined enough to stick it out and I think those traits will have a huge impact on the type of HC he can eventually become.

As a rookie Coach, I don't see Mike as a weak link

He's a grinder, trying to do his thing, build his NFL future

So sure he sucked at WR

I was thinking the other day, if Flores hadn't been fired last year he would've been fired this year. His defense wouldn't have been much better, because the injuries at corner made his amoeba defense unplayable, and the offense wouldn't have been anywhere near as effective with whatever random OC he would've hired. We'd be talking about Tua's potential on top of his health as he would've improved but not impressed. Basically, we'd be the same place we always are, which is moving fast and going nowhere.

I think McDaniel was a huge asset last year. Defense is easier to fix than offense, so we can finally be justifiably optimistic, for a change. I'm so happy we got him.

Oh, on a side note, advanced metrics say he was the second most aggressive coach last season behind Sirianni. If he hadn't gone for it on 4th and one from our 37 against the Ravens in the first quarter, on a drive that ended in a touchdown, we lose that game. I love our coach.

so you are vehemently disagreeing with me, but making the point of my post at the same time, I am confused. yeah he did kind of stink - ZERO receptions in his career. that was my whole point, it was the grit and determination he showed to stick with it and make the team. but yeah, he was no good
