I live out in California, and I was listening to KNBR, the official station of the 49'ers. Ralph Barbieri interviewed Mike Nolan the head coach of the 9er's who said that the he had the final say on who they pick. He also said that one of his concerns about taking the job with the 49'ers was that the owner John York was cheap. York told him that money wouldn't be an issue. Nolan said that he can spend as much as he needs to, but his concern is the salary cap.

Ralph Barbieri asked him point blank if he knew who he would choose, if they didn't trade down and he said that he did. He stressed that money wasn't an issue in the pick, other than for cap purposes. It has been widely reported that they would take Rodgers, cause his agent wasn't as tough in negociating as Smiths (Tom Condon).

After the interview, Ralph Barbieri had Kevin Lynch the beat writer for the SF Chronicle on. He follows the 49er's. He was saying and Ralph agreed that they only reason that the 49er's have seemed so interested in Smith, is because they want all the trade offers to go through them, and not Miami or Cleveland. Lynch said that even though he follows the 9er's closely, he really doesn't have a clue what they were going to do.

Anyways, take it for it what its worth...(not a lot, probably....:D )

But it is an interesting guess on their part.....

Thanks for the info and welcome to the board :)

After reading this, they will take Rodgers.

By the way, welcome.

Yeah, that was my take on it too.

Which would work great for us....

Thanks for the good report. I think Lynch has a good perspective on things. The 49ers themselves may have had trouble deciding on the pick up until now.

It will be an interesting few days - but, I have my doubts about our ability to trade down.

that would work well for us to have minny and tampa fighting over our #2 things could go well. Im getting a f@cking headeache from all this crap :chair:

These few days before the draft are killing me. I just want Saturday to be here now! So many rumors that I can't keep track of any more. lol.

Yeah...you've been slackin :D

Just kidding

This being the case there is no way any deal with the Vikings can happen until we are on the clock or unless the 49ers and Smith strike a deal before the draft. We can not make a deal one way or the other until SF makes a decision. If we go and trade out of #2 and then the 49ers Rodgers we would look like fools for if no other reason if other teams want Smith the pick would have higher value at that point.

Just like ESPN said, we are in the drivers seat. Everything will be based on what SF does. If they take Aaron Rogers, then all the teams that are interested in Alex Smith will be calling...if they take Alex Smith, all the teams that are interested in Braylon Edwards will be calling. I think we are in the best position to trade out and get more picks. Saban has really set us up well. Gotta like this guy so far. Two thumbs up!!

I do hope we find a way to trade down with the Bucs or Vikes, to at least get a second rounder and another third or fourth rounder too.

I'll just be glad to get it over with though, no matter what happens. Having a pick so high and so many questions/options is getting insane.

Very interesting report. It's rare a coach will concede he worried the ownership was too damn cheap.

I disagree with a few posters above. If they have already made up their mind, I'm confident the choice is Smith. There are too many legit questionmarks about Aaron Rodgers to have identified him above everyone else several days before the draft.

Plus, all the wiseguy national reporters have been isolating Smith as the likely pick the past several days. I've learned not to question their sources. In a 50/50 scenario, you'll go broke betting against them.

IMO if they were taking Smith, they would have announced it already. It wouldn't prevent people from saying "Wait, Wait... we'll trade" ala Manning/Rivers. Their silence is a strong indication to me that they will go with Rodgers.
