Mock based on needs version 1.

Here is my crack at a mock for this year. Last year I called 2 picks. Lets see how I do this year. This is based upon our needs rather than a personal preference. Let me know what you think.


1st- Amobi Akoye DT Louisville (Quinn will be gone, and so will Levi. The best offensive players are off the board for the 9th pick. Traylor is gone after next year, so it makes sense. I actually like this kid. He has a good character and is a safe investment.)

2nd a- Tony Ugoh LT Arkansas (Our needs at LT is obvious. Stanton should be gone as well, to oakland or detroit. Whichever passes on Quinn.)

2nd b- Sydney Rice South Carolina WR (Great WR for the price)

3rd- Kevin Kolb QB Houston (Best QB available when the pick is right, definitely not my choice, just what I see happening)

4th- Zak Deossie LB Brown (Great prospect to take over for aging LBs)

5th-Harrington (Thanks Saban)

6th-Kasay Studdard G Texas (This is just a mean SOB. I love his aggresiveness)

7th-Orenthal Oneil FB Arkansas (Great lead blocker, can run for 2 yds when needed)
 
Not bad. If I may add my 2 cents as well as things that will be brought up anyways, Okoye doesnt fit our system. Being a smaller DT, he is too small to be a NT in the 3-4 system that we run. If we still ran a 4-3, he'd be great but he cant make a very good impact in Miami. Secondly, DeOssie is shooting up the draft boards so he is likely gone in the late 2nd or early 3rd. On the flip side, I love the Rice pick. Outside of CJ and Ginn, Rice is the WR I want to see in Miami. He is raw but has tremendous athleticism and body control that could develop into something special. Kolb, I cant complain about either. Studdard I have heard a mix of things about but for a 6th round pick, you just gotta cross your fingers and hope for the best. Not a bad mock but Id revise Okoye.

Thanks for the input. Ive heard the same thing about Okoye and his size, but many have said the he would bulk up with time and that he could play a 3-4. He has already gained lbs since his last game. I believe hes at 301. Id take his spead and aggressiveness over 10 more lbs. As far as Deossie, hes my choice to get passed up. Maybe it is wishful thinking.

Like you said, Okoye is more valuable with speed and aggression instead of 10 extra pounds. That said, he shouldnt be worth the pick for us. We would need him to eat up blockers and stop the run. If he is only so-so at that, then its not worth it, we might as well snag Alan Branch. If we are in a 4-3, we could take advantage of those great attributes that he would offer but thats just not the case.

As for DeOssie, his athleticism and measurables are off the chart, not too mention his pedigree. I, like you, am keeping my fingers crossed that he falls. Coming from Brown, I didnt expect as much exposure for him than he got, which hasnt worked in our favor. If he is gone, Jon Abbate is well worth a look if he is available.

Would you prefer Alan Branch with that pick if we had to take a DT?
I just dont like when I hear work ethic with a first round pick. When I look at the players I think will be taken by 9, the best players available are defensive guys especially at DT and CB. Safety as well, but we have more glaring needs. Ginn does make some sence because we get a WR and a KR, but its risky when he has injury problems already.
 
I think I would be happy with everything but Okoye. Frankly, I think he is Tampa's surprise pick at #4. I could definitely seeing us explore a few trade up options, or going with Ginn Jr. or Leon Hall or Olsen (in that order).

If I had to take a DT for the fins, I would take Branch only because he fits the system. Okoye is young and will be a stud in the right system... we are just not that system. I'd much rather address the DT spot later in the draft with a guy like Paul Soliai from Utah or Tank Tyler. If we remain at 9, I think we shouldnt reach with a pick, even if it might be a need. Branch is tempting but if the FO doesnt think he fits so well, I dont want to stretch it. Ginn, IMO, will do the most for the team and we might be able to trade back a little and still get him as well. CB at 9 is out of the question for me but would be great value in the 2nd round.

I like Okoye but not for our defence....if we're go d-line at 9 it'd be Branch imo....I'd take Blaylock instead of Ugoh and I want Ginn in the 1st....I like Kolb tho but I like Stanton better at this point.

If we ran our old system, I'd be all for Okoye. I'm not taking anything away from him or his game and I think he will be a force in the near future. Its just that, with what we need, he doesnt fit. Its like taking a lamborghini to go on the Rubicon Trail.



Ginn, thats a totally different story. IMO, he is the perfect addition to our team. Not only would he give us a threat at recieving, but we would have a KR/PR threat that we havent had for at least a decade. I could go on and on about the ways he can help but I dont wanna highjack ur thread.

I agree Ginn would be a great #1 pick with the caveat that he is healthy. With the investment involved in a 1st rounder, what if his ankle or foot injury is chronic? His speed is what makes him so valuable. If you take the best feature away from a guy (CPEP) they lose the effectiveness.

The flip side to that coin is if he is healthy, we can stretch the field and have an immediete threat on KR PR. Our offense needs that kind of boost. It would even help our running game by keeping the SS out of the box.

yea, alot of guys don't realize the little things that he would add to the team. All they see is speed, speed, speed and think about guys like Tim Dwight or Rocket Ismail. As for the ankle, I dont see much reason for concern. He hasn't be plagued by injury for his whole career and it is reasonable to get completely healthy now (during the offseason) rather than risking it for no good reason. People are making a big deal about his combine since they just want to put a number next to his name. If he doesnt run, then they can't fall back onto statistics.
