Seasoned Veteran
Here is another Mock Draft, i've had two so far that have been pretty solid, again, I do extensive research on these and dont just pull names out of a hat, in other words, i'm not Wanny.
1. Chris Long DE Virginia-not much bad you can say about the kid, and we need youth on defense desperately, it's time we stopped neglecting adding young talented players to our front 7.
2a. Antoine Cason CB Arizona-Again, not much bad you can say about him, he is the best corner in the draft, and will prove it on the field. Always shows up in big games and is a defensive leader.
2b. Carl Nicks T Nebraska- some people dont think he'll drop to the mid-second round, but with Jake Long, Ryan Clady, Jeff Otah, Chris Williams and on some draft boards Sam Baker ahead of him, its not unlikely. Some would also suggest we pick him with pick 2a, but at this point i think that adding playmaking to the secondary at that spot is more important than Oline. Nicks is beastly good, he's 6'4'' 341 and runs a 5.12 40, has long arms at 35 in, and benched 31 reps.
3. Josh Barrett SS Arizona St.-I love this kids abilities. he's 6'1'' 223 and runs a 4.35 40, yep a 4.35 40. notched 83 tackles and 3 INTs his senior season, and should be a force in our defensive backfield. Gives us a great young crop of talent in the secondary with Allen, Cason and Barrett.
4. Paul Hubbard WR Wisconsin- he's 6'3'' 221 and runs a 4.38 40, oh yeah, and he has a 39 INCH VERTICAL! so why is he still on the board here? well he is coming off a knee injury that sidelined him for 07, but if he can run and jump like that, i'd say the knee looks fine. He's also had some history with dropped passes, but in the 4th round, i'll gamble on his athleticism.
5. no pick.
6. Gary Barnige TE Louisville- has the size and speed combo at 6'6'' 243 and runs a 4.63 40, also had 22 reps on the bench and 31inch vert. Turned in a solid 07 campaign with 53 catches for 655 yards and 7 TD's. TE is a position of need and if we can get that kind of production and athleticism in the 6th round, there is no reason to burn an early pick on the position.
7. Louis Holmes DE Arizona- Holmes has lacked production at Arizona, but has the physical gifts, he's 6'6'' 270 and could add more to become a traditional down lineman. ran solidly at the combine to the tune of a 4.7 40. I envision him as a solid outside rush linebacker and gifted special teamer. His main issue was lower body strength (in my opinion, and i've seen him play in person over 5 times), he was good at getting off the ball and had decent initial pop, but had no leg push to move bigger o-linemen. If he works on his leg strength and can add 10-15 pounds, he could be a solid DE in the 3-4, or could stay at his current weight and be used as a backer, his versatility is a major plus.
Players to watch in UDFA:
Ryan O'Hara QB-Central Oklahoma-level of competition is a factor, but he's accurate, and has decent arm strength
Wilrey Fontenot CB Arizona-size is a factor at only 5'8'', but runs in the low 4.3's, would make a solid dime corner.
Martel Van Zant CB Oklahoma St.- is more suited to FS in the NFL at 6'1'' 210 and running a 4.5 40, an ankle injury coming in the last game of the year has hindered his ability to work out, however, he did bench 25 reps at his pro day in the one event he was able to participate in. He's deaf and unfortunately I feel that that will scare some teams off, but i like his play.
Red Keith ILB Central Michigan- recorded two straight 100+ tackle seasons, has the size at 5'11'' 245. had 4 picks in 06.
Jason Shirley DT Fresno St.-he's 6'5'' 330 and runs a 4.98 40. enough said.
