here we go, the 6th installment in my mock draft series.
1. Jake Long T Michigan
he may not be the most popular choice, but he is the right choice, we have two GAPING holes on our Oline and he fills one of them right off the bat giving us further flexibility in the 2-4 rounds where the real depth lies in this draft, this is one of the most bottom heavy drafts i've seen in a while and i think that going with Jake here gives us the opprotunity to capitalize on that.
2a. Antoine Cason CB Arizona
our starting corners are Will Allen and Mike Lehan. yeah, Mike Lehan, i dont know about you all, but i'm not comfortable at all with him being our guy. Cason is a playmaker and in my opinion the most complete corner in the draft with experience, hardware, numbers, intensity, and clutch. Gives us a play maker in the secondary which has lacked since Patrick Surtain was auctioned off (grrrrr...).
2b. Carl Nicks T Nebraska
would play guard for us and be an absolute beast. at 6'4'' 341, he runs a 5.12 40, has 35 inch arms and benched 31 reps at the combine. I know a lot of people are iffy on going with two olinemen this early, but i feel that it starts in the trenches and with a line of Carey, Smiley, Satele, Nicks, Long, that it will give John Beck the protection he needs to succeed and also give Ronnie some serious holes, could easily give us one of the best young offensive lines in the league.
3. Philip Wheeler LB Georgia Tech
I like Wheeler here because he can play both outside and inside, would give us some serious depth at linebacker, and would likely compete with Torbor for a starting spot next to Crowder, helps us get younger without a huge drop off.
4. Paul Hubbard WR Wisconsin
thought about going QB here, but i really think John Beck needs a chance to suceed, if he falters McCown can step in and at least hold down the fort, we dont need to be worrying about developing 2 young QBs, lets focus on the one we have. Hubbard is a beast, he stands at 6'2'' 221 and ran a 4.38 40 at his pro day, he also has a 39.5 inch vertical leap, his stock isnt sky high because he is coming off a knee injury, but if he's running and jumping like that, i dont think there are any adverse effects. In the 6 games he played in in 07, he averaged 21.8 ypc which is incredible. Would give us an incredibly talented group of WR's with Ginn Jr and Wilford.
5. This Doesn't Look Like Arrowhead Stadium...Wait, Who Am I Again?
6a. Gary Guyton LB Georgia Tech
he's 6'1'' 245 and runs a 4.47 40 with a 40 inch vertical leap. Think about these possibilities, let's say he doesnt crack the rotation at linebacker, fine. let him play SS, at 6'1'' 245 and speed and hops like that, tight ends and running backs will be crapping themselves, its like having a 5th linebacker on the filed without giving up any speed and even if that doesnt work out, he'd make one hell of a special teamer, he'd be a great assest on punt and kick coverages, a low risk in the 6th round with enormous potential.
6b. Keilen Dykes DT West Virginia
would play as an end in our scheme, has solid size at 6'3'' 306 and moves decently well with a 5.08 40. a 2-time All Big East Selection, he provides depth right off the bat and would likely push for playing time, allows us to rotate linemen which as we have seen was our down fall in run stopping last year.
7a. Kory Sperry TE Colorado St.
had his most productive season in 05 notching 547 yards on 42 catches, also at 6'6'' 260 has a nice frame. Runs well at 4.79, possibly a case of a good player stuck on a bad team. The biggest bright side for any tight end we draft is that he cant be any worse than David Martin.
7b. Lance Ball RB Maryland
stands at 5'9'' 225 and runs in the 4.4's, he certainly has the physical tools to succeed. I see him developing into a Micheal Turner type, could eventually provide a compliment to Ronnie Brown and allow Ronnie to take less punishment.
there ya go, ?'s or comments are much appreciated.
