First off, here are my free agent predictions.
Pacman Jones, Reggie Nelson, Trevathan (linebacker Denver), Paul Solai.
Re-sign: Lamar Miller, Derrick Shelby
Trevathan plays in a 3-4 so maybe not a perfect fit for a 4-3, but I'd put him at middle linebacker. I don't see Miami matching Olivier Vernon, but could maybe get Trevathan for $8-9 million. Jones and Nelson should be reasonable salaries along with Solai. Might make a play for a cheap veteran receiver like Andre Johnson.
1. Vernon Hargreaves DB Floriday --- Miami needs a shutdown corner and Hargreaves has been that since his first game at Florida. I think he's the choice, but the Dolphins could go pass rusher here with Kevin Dodd a possibility or DeForest Buckner if he drops. I think the team will bring in some veteran help in the secondary via free agency (Adam Jones possible), but Hargreaves could still be in play.
2. Joshua Garnett OG Stanford -- Looks like a nice fit as a physical guard with toughness who can get to the second level. Lots of talent to choose from in R2, but Dolphins have to improve the offensive line. Not sure that will happen in free agency as the quality players will price themselves out.
3. Sean Oakman DE/DT Baylor --- Lots of differing opinions on Oakman, but scouts agree on his freak physical abilities. At this point, I doubt Miami can match a big contract for Olivier Vernon. Some veteran help could come in free agency.
4. Dadi Nichol DE/OLB Virgina Tech -- A possible rush linebacker or pass rushing specialist, Nichol was talked about as a first round pick before a less than stellar senior season. Need to find some pass rush help.
5. Jaylon Smith OLB/MLB Notre Dame --- A possible top 5 pick before a serious injury, Smith is a gamble here. If he comes back, the Dolphins could have a steal. If he doesn't the risk is only a 5th rounder.
5. Brandon Shell OT South Carolina --- A projected trade here with Miami giving up a 6th and 7th to move back into the 5th for Shell. I like Shell as a physical run blocker who could be that swing tackle the team needs.
7. Deon Bush S Miami -- I like his potential and if paired with a good coach could pay dividends. Vance Joseph could really help Bush smooth out his game IMO.
