DOLPHINS DRAFT TALK
For those hoping Washington defensive tackle Danny Shelton slips to Miami with the 14th pick, that might be wishful thinking, based on projections of analysts.
"Shelton is a top-10 pick for me," Mike Mayock said today on a conference call. "I love him. Reminds me of Haloti Ngata. I think everybody sees that comparison."
As Mayock noted, the Dolphins badly need a cornerback, though it's quite possible that could be addressed in free agency.
If the Dolphins take a corner at 14, Mayock said the top three options at the position are Michigan State's Trae Waynes, Washington's Marcus Peters (has had off-field issues that could scare away the Dolphins) and LSU's Jalen Collins.
"Trae is very comfortable in press coverage," Mayock said. "He's got length. He jumps up there like all the Michigan State corners do. He understands the game. He's played through the field, he's played into the boundary. He tackles. I know when you get a Michigan State kid coming off that defense, he's got a tough kid that will tackle that's been well-coached. So that appeals to me first and foremost. His length, his competitiveness, and the fact that he can play press and will tackle.
"Beyond that, I am intrigued by the Jalen Collins kid at LSU who has nine or ten starts in his career. Came out early, but he's 6-2 and similar to Waynes in that he will compete in press coverage. They're the three top guys. P.J. Williams from Florida State is in the conversation, but I think he's a little later. And I think Trae Waynes make-up, and the fact that I trust that he'll come in and compete day one is kind of a difference maker for me."
### Though some have linked West Virginia receiver Kevin White to Miami at No. 14, Mayock said: "Kevin White's my No. 1 wideout. I think if he runs 4.5 or better, he's a top 10 pick."
Unlike most draftniks, Mayock has Alabama receiver Amari Cooper rated behind White. Louisville receiver Devante Parker projects for Miami's range.

if miami drafts trae waynes it's a poor scheme fit...miami doesnt play much press man coverage...have to match personnel with scheme fit for best results...that wouldnt be it

shouldnt be on our board as a corner as a result...not on mine despite being a very good prospect...we need fluid hips and comfortable in off coverage and zone and good awareness corners...

Wish we would play more press... Not sure why, I just prefer it more though

Hickey definitely seems to understand getting players that match the system. If he's a bad fit, I doubt we will see him drafted here

that's the thing I don't like about the staff. get the best players and put them in the best situation, atleast on defense. im a dc and if I have a kid with certain strengths we make it apart of our scheme to make sure you have the best 11 on the field.

Brent Grimes and Finnegan last year were too small for press. When we had bigger guys like Sean Smith and Vontae i think we played it more.

No doubt they're too small. Thought Finnegan used to be good at it.. I think Grimes would be okay as long as he's not too physically overmatched.

I remember watching VD and SS smother guys. Just seems like a "better" d to me... But I guess the main thing sticking out to me right now is the constant collapses late in games. Pitch n catch

We need to take the best player available no matter what position. It's about time our first rounder is about impact and starter material day 1

Maybe this staff could take a talented player and tailor a plan about he does well as opposed to what the coaches like to coach up.

What if you have players who have talents that contradict each other in schemes?

I agree with you. But I think Miami's decision not to play much press man was more personnel related then scheme. with the blitzing that Coyle likes I bet he would have loved to play more press man but he was reluctant to do so due to the players he had to work with. I give him credit. People jump down his throat but he gave his defense the best chance to live without committing suicide. He did not have the players to be aggressive every down.

I think you and I had a decision on this following the Denver game. If you keep the offense snapping the ball there is a chance they make a mistake. You play aggressive and don't have the players to do so you give up the home run. Kill me fast or kill me slow. At lot of people here did not like his approach but I can live with it either way.

Great coaching is adapting to a player's strengths and masking their weaknesses.

Cliche argument...and still didn't answer the question...

What defense do you run when you have some players that fit man press and otheer that are suited for Zone?

What blocking scheme do you use when you have Road graders and move athletes?

What front would you consider when you have a peices that fot a 3-4 and a 4-3, but don;t have a complete "set"

Its not cliche…lol. I agree that you might draft certain players that have better fits. However, if a player is VERY talented and has a certain talent, make it fit.

The Patriots are masters of masking their players weakness and emphasizing their strengths.
