Montana says Marino was the GOAT, not him or Brady

Besides actually winning super bowl titles, I'm not sure any other football experience matched the first time I saw Dan Marino play as a Miami Dolphin.

Holy cow, a word used by Joe Montana, probably best fits my reaction back then in a Monday nighter against the Raiders.

Goosebumps for sure. He was special.

Im gonna get killed which is not going to be fair. There's a reason 13 is my lucky number & Dan my sports hero. But Brady is the greatest QB in NFL history. Period.

I wish you could convince me it's even a debate because you can throw team at me ALL day long but I have seen Brady bring back said bad-ass teams from behind time... & time... & annoyingly time again way too many times. I have seen Belicheat spread out those offenses 5 wide from the very first snap of the game & let Brady do what he does time... & time... & annoyingly time again way too many times.

There's a reason why the Giants are my 2nd favorite team in the league. If not for them, the only thing this franchise has to hold over others is the perfect season & that monolith of a QB almost took that away from us as well.

And if you can please stop hating me enough right now to understand HOW FERVENTLY I despise Tom Brady, how amazing Brady must be to make a fan who's love of football goes 50/50 with his father & Dan Marino, bend the knee.

If you want to tell me Marino is the greatest passer the league has ever seen- certify that.

No hate. Did you read the article? Montana makes a distinction between “greatest” and “best” - the former is associated w team achievements like championships, the latter based on pure ability / talent - to which he says Marino was the best and gives his reasons.

What does that say about Shula at that point then?
Aw cmon now :)

That era - when the NFC team would wipe the field w the AFC team in the SB even though the AFC team usually had the better QB in the game - it just wasn’t in the cards. Those NFC teams always weighed 20-30 pounds per player more than the AFC guys in the trenches. And every SB, the NFC lines would push the AFC ones around like they were on roller skates. Even Bruce Smith and co couldn’t do anything against the great Dallas OL.

Guys named Rypien, Theisman, Williams, Simms, Hostetler and yea, even Aikman were beating QBs so much better than them in Elway and Kelly over and over. Cleo Lemon would have a ring had he played in front of the Hogs - 3 diff mediocre QBs won SBs handing the ball off to big RBs who ran wild in those games. Timmy Smith anyone?

Funny thing - Montana was really the only great QB in his conference while the AFC had Marino, Elway, Kelly, Fouts, Moon and even Boomer.

I don’t think it say anything more about Shula as any other of the best coaches in the conference in that era such as Dan Reeves, Marty Schottenheimer or Marv Levy

Force = Mass x Acceleration. Those NFC OL and DLs were too forceful for the smaller AFC lines. FA evened the playing field too late for Don and Dan unfortunately.

Marino was the greatest passer in NFL history…he would absolutely crush the current NFL and its pass friendly rules and protection of the QB….

Montana knows it…just as Brady and Manning know they never sniff Marino’s passing numbers without the 2000’s rules changes…truth!

Shula wasn’t the problem as a coach…the reason Miami failed to win Superbowls in the 80’s as they had in the 70’s was the lack of a successful GM…period
I agree. But maybe Walsh is trying to take the credit by his statement
