Can't yet find a link, but there is a very curious rumor attributed to Newsday's Rob Glauber. The story is suggesting three-time Super Bowl MVP Joe Montana refused the NFL pre-game Super Bowl MVP ceremony when the league wouldn't pony up a $100,000 appearance fee he demanded.

If it's true, then for the first time I can remember, Joe "God" will be facing some serious bad pub.

For the record, Terry Bradshaw and Jake Scott also declined to attend.

Bradshaw and Montana didn't appear because of money.

Jake Scott was on vacation in Australia.

They were the only 3 not to appear. Montana won't get bad pub because does anyone really care that he wasn't there? Non-story!

Where does Montana get off doing this? The Super Bowl made him who he is. He owes the SB and the NFL and doing what he did made him look like a douche. Get your act together Joe, without your rings dog no one even knows who the hell you are!

For some reason, Bradshaw does not have a good relationship with Pittsburgh or the Steelers organization. This may have played a part.

Low-ball move by Montana if I do say so myself. A Real ******bag thing to do.

The former MVPs were guaranteed $1,000 for incidental expenses while in Detroit. The NFL also provided each former Super Bowl MVP with two first-class airplane tickets, a hotel room, a Cadillac for the weekend, two tickets to the game, two tickets to the Friday night commissioner's party, two tickets to a Saturday night party and two tickets to a Sunday tailgate party. There also were opportunities for paid appearances arranged by the NFL.

All that alone is worth SO much.

Montana is an arrogant jerk. Who cares if he wasn't there. What did he think they would do, stop the Super Bowl because he wasn't there. Stories like this make me sick. I never liked him anyway. Now I like him less.

if you feel this is a non story, why is it the top headline on ESPN.com?

it's a huge story... because the golden boy is about to get some negative press... he owes it to the NFL to be there, i feel... and many people feel...

Yeah, I was wondering why Montana and Bradshaw weren't there... I can't believe they wouldn't show because of money, all they had to do was just walk down when their name was announced.

Montana is a loser if he thinks he is bigger than the league or deserves an "apperance fee." I heard Jake Scott was on vacation, and Terry Bradshaw is actually a pretty shy person who doesn't like to have the focus on himself or be in the limelight (unlike his nfl analyst position)...he did not have the best relationship with the Steelers, but I don't think he was trying to show them up.
