Moore, 28 and in the final year of his contract, stands atop the Dolphins’ depth chart at quarterback. But, fittingly for a guy who has been an afterthought much of his career, he might not even be the team’s starter Friday against the Carolina Panthers in the team’s second exhibition game.
Coach Joe Philbin has yet to announce who will play first against Moore’s old team, the Panthers. But Philbin’s rotation in practice Tuesday might have tipped his hand: Tannehill worked solely with the first-team offense, and Moore got snaps with the starters and backups.
Plus, Tannehill needs to play with the first team at least once in an exhibition game before the coaching staff can settle on who starts the season opener Sept. 9, a decision that could come as early as next week.

The margin between the quarterbacks — one a sixth-year veteran, the other right out of college — is slim, Philbin acknowledged recently. In situations like this, the tie could go to the rookie

If Matt Moore has a future as a starting quarterback, it won’t be in Miami. Moore conceded Tuesday that he’s using whatever action he sees this year as an audition for his next team.

“Maybe it’s something that organizations don’t see in me,” Moore said with typical candor, “but I still have just enough to stay around. But as a player, you want to be a starter, whether it’s here or not.”

This is a great article from Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald with some pretty interesting insight. I understand Moore knows he is not the future in Miami & would might like to start but him saying he is taking whatever action as an audition for his next team seriously make me question his competitiveness, it almost as he has already given up at starting. This is backup talk & that is exactly what Moore has proven to be this offseason. If he really wanted to start he should have outplayed Garrard & Tannehill at camp & he has not.

I've said for a while now on my twitter account that Moore is to laid back & has this california cool about him I don't like, Hardknocks has done a great job of showing it. Moore lacks the fire a QB needs & this article does a great job of proving it. In my opinion he is fine with being a backup in this league & reminds me of Alex Morran of Blue Mountain State & this is coming from someone who really pulled for Moore last year & at times in the offseason felt Miami did not have to draft a QB cause of Moore's body of work last year. Im man enough to admit I was very wrong.

As long as Garrard is hurt and made of glass, Moore will have a spot on this team...at least this year. There's no doubt, though, Tannehill will be the long term starter for us and while Moore would be a nice backup, I don't see him wanting to play that role for too long.

We drafted Ryan Tannehill #8 overall and the kid can obviously play. Matt Moore would need to be an absolute idiot or in complete denial to think that he's going to have a fair shot to be Miami's long-term solution at QB.

+1.

His cool calm demeanor can also mean he's level headed, doesn't let his emotions get too high/low, has no problem with what people think about him. He produced last season and I think he can do well this season but he's not the future. Hard Knocks has shown he's a good teammate, works hard, and is a family man. Not a bad guy to have on the team as a starter or backup especially for his salary.

As for the article it's basically a summary of Matt Moore's career and him acknowledging he's been undervalued and he's always prepared to play no matter his role. It doesn't phase him but he's made it clear he wants to be a starter.

Moore is just saying what everyone knows to be true, but it wouldn't surprise me if the coaches -- at least in their own minds -- view this as the last bit of justification they need to start Tannehill and not look back.

Perhaps Moore feels free to say this because he sees the writing on the wall. It's one thing to compete with another veteran and things be neck and neck. But when you can't even keep your distance from the 8th overall pick, you know the end must be near.

But if he just let it slip in a moment of candor, it wouldn't shock me to see the coaches seize on it, start Tannehill on Friday, and unless he utterly ****s the bed name Tannehill the starter for the 3rd preseason game and beyond. Looking forward to your next opportunity is something all coaches utterly despise. But from someone who's in direct competition to start at quarterback? Not a smart move, Matt.

It's hard to be a leader when your teammates know you've already got one foot out the door. And leadership is consistently the word Philbin uses more than any other when talking about the quarterback position.

This thing is over, imo. Tannehill's the starter.

moore is better on the field then in practice/training camp...i love tannehill but i wouldnt count moore out until he F's up in the regular season

dont forget alex morran took em to the championship game and became an all everything player after his years of wanting to be a backup. maybe moore wins the starting job and takes us to the promise land....doubtful, im leading towards tanne, but we can hope...and dang i miss that show

Tannehill has one decent preseason game. Let's all see how it plays out. Moore won 6 of 9 for this team and saved us from the garbage formally known as Henne. I think it's anyone's game and for Tanne to start he has to continue to improve and shine, and Moore has got to be ineffective. But we need a lot more than one game to see that. I don't expect them to decide until after the 4th game.

does not matter what he did last year, its a new head coach so its a clean slate for everybody and right now he is not pleading his case as a starter on the field.

I personally dont care who starts, but obviously I want to see our new shiny toy in action so.....wtf

The Dolphins likely will not cut Garrard. Moore won't be here next year. He has good trade value and Garrard is a cheap backup.

I think you are wrong. No team is going to trade for Moore because they can get him for "free" as a FA in a few months which means that Garrard is likely gone.

Moore knew his stint in Miami was likely ending as soon as the Fins drafted Tannehill. He's being smart and honest about his situation. He won't re-sign with Miami because he wants to be a starter, and regardless of what Tannehill does/doesn't do this season, the Fins are committed to him starting for at least 2 more years after this one. He'll likely sign with a team that has a weak starter but isn't likely to draft a first round QB.
