Another reason for Miami to switch ...
I mean Steelers, Ravens, Patsies, Donkeys, etc

We'd need a true Nose Tackle, but overall I think it fits our current talent better. Therefore, I'd bet against us making the change, given our current coaching staff.

I think we run some sets with 3-4, but think we'd be better off making that our base.

The Pats, and Broncos run a 4-3 base with 3-4 hybrid.

I kind of like that one in Seattle the best. LOL.

of the teams you mentioned, none of them made the playoffs because of their defense

The switch makes a lot of sense for this team. You already have the personnel.

Sure, it would be nice to have a big NT in the middle, and you can go after a Dan Williams, but worse comes to worse, you have Earl Mitchell, who played NT in Houston's 3-4. You also have guys in Starks and Odrick who both have played in the 3-4 at the DE (5 tech) spot.

At OLB, Dion Jordan immediately becomes a major factor in that unit.. Cam Wake will have to go back to 2009 Cam Wake, a situational pass rusher who I believe led the league in pressure average. I think this benefits Olivier Vernon as well. You can throw him at the other OLB spot, where he can use his strengths as a run stopper in addition to his new found niche as a pass rusher. Still have solid depth with Shelby and McCain as well. With this group of OLB's, you really need an aggressive D coordinator who will find ways for his guys to get to the QB.

The big concern would have to be at ILB. Jelani Jenkins is a 4-3 OLB, in the 3-4, he will have to kick inside and play the WILL as he's gonna have to be able move in coverage from that spot. Koa Misi seems to fit the MIKE role. Bigger guy who can stuff the run and still run with players better than other options that we have. You'll probably have to keep Wheeler around for depth since there is no salary cap relief. I'd have to wonder if this allows Ellerbe to stick as well as he clearly is more comfortable as a 3-4 ILB. Either way, there are options here.

I like the idea, it really makes a lot of sense and I hope the Dolphins consider making this change.

Drafting Danny Shelton would be step 1 to a conversion IMO. A version of the 3-4 which Schottenheimer ran in KC yrs ago based on speed & similar to what SD runs has possibilities.

Fede & Mitchell would be the other DL in a front like the Ravens (0, 3, & 5 techniques).

Rotating Jenkins, Wake, Jordan, McCain at OLB and then Misi, Tripp, & Ellerbee (I said it) @ ILB might work.

edit - Anthony Johnson might thrive. Though, what happens to Vernon?

Other than the lack of a true NT and stud ILB, it seems like the Dolphins brain trust is trying to run a 4-3 with 3-4 personnel.
Another indictment of Philbin and the signing of Coyle.
Our choices are get rid of existing players to fit Coyle, or get rid of Coyle and find a coach that can make these players better.

And we had a true NT in Soliai who probably would of been kept had we went with a 3-4 defense. I'm personally done with Coyle . . . that was one of the worst collapses down the stretch I have ever seen. I just go back to that Broncos game . . . at some point you have to send more people. You sit back and watch Peyton Manning fix a ****ing Chicken Parm sandwich while shredding up your defense and you just keep sending your same 4 guys after him. Yea I understand you had some injury issues in the secondary but that game started a free fall for this entire defense and Coyle had no idea who to snap out of it and let's not even get on the run defense. Absolutely horrific.

So yea, I'd look into getting a coordinator that brings a 3-4 with him and see what he can do with this group.

Vernon is a really good fit for a 3-4 OLB. Hell when he first came out, he was athletic enough to play OLB in the 4-3. Of course he put on some weight to fill out as a 4-3 DE. People may not realize, but Vernon strengths always situated around him being a very good run stopper and a raw pass rusher. He has developed that part of his game nice and I think 3-4 OLB could definitely be a breath of fresh air into his game. He and Jordan SHOULD start at OLB . . . IMO . . . with Wake as a situational pass rusher (if not traded or even cut because of salary).

Yeah, this defense is soooo 3-4 ready. I mean Mccain and Dion Jordan as OLBs and Jenkins and Misi in the Middle. I know we are lacking true NT but this draft is loded with true NT or just sign Terrence Knighton from denver who is amazing locker room leader plus a great run stuffer.

What concerns me is that they will keep Coyle and it will take several years to get "his" guys on the field.
I agree about the Denver game. We were getting toasted and he didn't mix it up.
Coyle should be replaced with a 3/4 DC. That would be the smart move.
Finding a run stuffer won't be hard. Draft Kendricks and we are well on our way.

We can't make move to the 3-4 without a true NT. Period. If you thought our run defense was bad this year, just wait til you make Mitchell, Starks, Odrick or Vernon responsible for two gaps and double teams.

We need to stick with a 4-3 and find a real MIKE.
