I decided to compile a list of wins by passer rating to see how Philbin stacks up against other coaches in this regard. I tried to include a hodgepodge of good QBs with what I consider to be bad coaches vs the best coaches.

A few things of note: I've made this comparison before but I think Jim Harbaugh is a modern day Shula so his numbers aren't that surprising to me. Jerry Jones is retarded if he doesn't fire Garrett, I've said he might be worse than Sparano and the numbers seem to indicate that. I have always felt that Philbin is at worst comparible to Marvin Lewis, in that if you give him 10 years to implement his sytem he will have us competitive for at least a spell. Tannehill and Dalton are two peas in a pod as well in my opinion but Dalton has way more games of 100+ passer rating, not sure what to make of that.

All good coaches should win when their QB has a good game, what sticks out to me is most coaches win at close to 100% when their QB has a rating of 100+ but the bad coaches don't have a good record when their QBs rating is in the 90s. One important question is how much impact can a coach have on getting his QBs rating in the 100s more consistently? It seems clear Harbaugh is able to but like I said, he might be the best coach in the league and maybe one of the best of all time. What about personnel, that should definitely have an impact as well. Is that why Dalton has so many more games with a passer rating in the 100s?

These numbers are all from the players last 4 seasons in most cases, what else stands out to you guys?

Any reason you included Brady, but not Brees, Aaron Rodgers, or Peyton Manning?

Because based on what you've posted here it looks like teams with ****ty defenses struggle to win even when their QB plays well. That's kind of the conclusion I draw from that.

I think you would need to include a defensive analysis that associates with the QB rating for each game...if a QB has a great game, but the defense sucks....you get Shula/Marino...

My OCD started kicking in mostly but I'm pretty sure Belichick is one of the best coaches and I don't follow those other guys nearly as much. It would be interesting to see Brees numbers with and without Payton though, maybe I'll do it later.

Philbin-Tannehill 12-1 vs Sparano-Henne 5-4 with passer rating 90+ with the same GM is interesting to me.

do brees numbers indoors and out doors...and then remember they are playing out doors in the wild card opener...vegas anybody???

Rivers 1-9 when his passer rating is in the 90's? Interesting.

I'm just saying, if you look at those teams, what strikes me is that San Diego and Dallas defenses have both been terrible the last couple of years and St. Louis's defense has wavered between awful and average. Same with the Giants.

Meanwhile, Miami the last two years has had a pretty good defense, Cincinnati's had an above average defense, San Francisco and Baltimore play good defense, New England, etc.

As for Philbin/Tannehill vs Sparano/Henne comparison in record, it's simple: Ryan Tannehill had more 4th quarter comebacks THIS YEAR than Chad Henne has had IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER. Also better in the red zone. That ain't the coach.

Are there any numbers as to why in the two last weeks of the season Joe's team was totally uninspired?

Silly analysis. The offensive system has a lot to do with it as well as defense and opponents.

the buffalo debacle wasn't the qb at all...or the head coach

Well, I think it was on two people:

1. Mike Sherman and his offensive gameplan
2. Jeff Ireland and the crapshow OL and backs he asked Mike Sherman to work with.

Even though I think #2 was the biggest problem, fact is that I think the coaching staff could have done a lot more to protect the damn franchise instead of GETTING HIM HURT and then throwing him back out there to get beat up some more.
