I know Ronnie's numbers in the passing game were skewed slightly because both his catches came on 3rd and long but i think that his #1 ability as a running back is on screen plays.
I think we will see alot more screens this year as our Oline is more agile than last year.

When Ronnie gets out into open space the guy is incredible. I know he is being scrutinized for not hitting the holes properly, but when he is out in the flat he can make alot of guys miss.

What do you guys think?

What? I think you need to finish the sentence.

I agree, this guy would be absolutely deadly out in the flat. Gotta have good blocking WRs and maybe a guard that can pull to have success consistently though. Can't say I know too much about either of those two things

I'm not sure Culpepper's knee is ready for a screen play.

Think about it: On a screen, the QB must backpedal drastically, so that the D-Line almost sacks the QB, which allows the RB to slip away unnoticed. I wonder if C-Pepper can physically accomplish this.

I mean, he might be physically able to do this, but in the preseason, why risk it?

i rekon it is because when he is out on the flat he is up against the smaller defenders in CB's so he can use his big hit ability on them, for example last year when he steamrolled the chiefs fella

After preseason, expect to see more screens, particularly to avoid or counter a big pass rush or lots of blitzing.

Ronnie made a move in the open field on that first 3rd and long that put two defenders on the ground as he skated by them.

So yeah, I think he needs to see more passes...period.

yea he needs more passes directed to him.if he catches a pass and hes one on one he can bust it out for a huge gain.we gotta take advantage of his ability

Ronnie played good in the Bucs game. However, there's always room to improve on something. I'm betting he's one of those players who's always looking for ways to get even better, loves the game of football, and wants to make it to the Hall of Fame, etc.

I think he was coached to be a downhill runner in college a lot and they didn't want him to be doing too many sharp cuts and fancy stuff. In my opinion, I think he ought try more Reggie Bush-style sharp cuts and jukes every now and then when he sees a little running room.

He first needs to make sure he's using the optimal ball carrying technique for each situation so he's not likely to be stripped or fumble if he takes a big hit. He could practice doing shuttle runs and 40s with the football, etc. I've heard of running backs who carry the ball around all day at home to practice it. He ought to practice doing the stiff arm and all that stuff. A lot of the great ones in NFL history have used it effectively to break out of arm tackles and turn those 8 yarders into 50 yard TDs.

He ought to be practicing hitting the hole at just the right time with his head up ...always looking around for green grass and defensive guys overpursuing ...then make that sharp cut and quick burst. When I was a running back as a kid, I used to like being in crowds like at the mall and practice cutting in and around people. :D

Practicing the little stuff can add up. Saban is always talking about details, details, details. Ronnie ought to be practicing every tiny little detail every few days like Tiger Woods practices his putts and chip shots, etc. Ronnie has a heck of a good job. That's what I would do if I were him. Sure as hell beats the jobs most people do after college.

I noticed quite a few different screens... WR screens, RB screens.. there is a team up in New England that won a few SBs making the screen a bread and butter play. Even though I started to get kinda frustrated at the lack of vertical excitement.. i did notice, that they were effective.

I think more screens will be good, but I also just want to see Ronnie cause more match up problems. In college, I remember a game Ronnie played against my Bulldogs, and he had a reception for about 40 yds. The guy has exceptional hands, and he will definitely have more receptions this season.

I think it worked a couple times against the Bucs. That was good. Will it always work? No. It is all about calling the right play at the right time to confuse the defense.
