It was eye-opening when Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said Thursday that defensive end Mario Williams needs to play harder. I mean, that is about a cruel and cutting a criticism of a player anyone can make.

There are, after all, players that make mental mistakes. There are players that simply are less athletically gifted than others. There are players lacking experience. All of those can be tolerated. All of those are understandable.

But not playing hard enough?

Are we freakin' kidding?

And yet there it was with Williams.

“He’s got to play better. He’s got to play harder. He’s got to play better," Joseph said.

Harder? Like he's cruising sometimes? Not giving maximum effort?

Unreal.

Except it is not unreal to Dolphins coaches. Sources tell me coaches on both sides of the ball think multiple players on both sides of the ball are not delivering full effort all the time. I've been told coaches discuss the lack of effort or inconsistent effort practically every week.

This is why you have to be vary careful with FA's that have had big contracts in the past. I've always said that it takes a special type of person to have the same level of commitment and passion to play after they've made good money. Football is hard and if you don't have a drive to be GREAT no matter if you're paid or not... you'll fizzle out. Many guys spend their entire lives playing this game with the hopes of one day signing that big contract that makes them financially secure. Once you get that security, now what's your motivation?

This was always known about Mario Williams...it's not some revelation.

Byron maxwell has to be another one...dude looks like he doesnt want to get his jersey dirty...his tackling attempts might be among the worst ive ever seen

I was hoping they would play Jordan Lucas over Maxwell last week. Lucas looks the part he just needs time but even as a rookie he would probably look better then Maxwell

This team has ben filled with lazy FA's by tBaum.
Gase is right to cut them. I would rather have a guy playing his heart out and losing than watch a bunch of players just coasting and losing.

i believe with maxwell its more like he stinks.

It's sad. I got used to Zach and JT and Marion always flying to the ball. Madison and Surtain playing with pride and now you just don't see it on our team. Give me 22 hungry guys what will run thru a wall if you ask them instead of all these high draft picks with no heart or soul. I want to see Steen our there instead of Pouncey. At least he'll try his heart out. I rather see Lippett out there at least trying to tackle than to see maxwell avoiding the tackle

Ozzy rules!!

This reminds me of Roger Dorn from the movie Major League........Don't give any of that olé BS!

Maxwells play is as stupid as his long sleeve tees...

If Mario is not in a pass rush situation he is cruising. He didnt come here to get gashed in the run game all day. He wanted to rush the passer only.

and then being 1-4.. yea he wont be giving any effort this season. Nothing to play for.

I personally think him and wake are washed. More Mario than Cam at this point.
