Positives:

Great Depth at the WR position. two of our top 3 receives didn't play (Stills, Parker) and we didn't skip a beat offensively. That's what a football team should look like depth wise. Had we lost 2 of our top 3 WR's last year we would have won 4 games.

Dallas Thomas: I know it's only one pre-season game against a not so great team BUT... last year Dallas Thomas was getting his ass kicked by 2nd and 3rd teamers. The fact that he held his own against starting caliber players is PROGRESS, which is in line with what everyone on the team has been saying about him.

Tannhill: Looked poised, and creative with the ball in his hands. Specifically that one screen he tried to through around the defender after pump faking. The defender made a great play and was still able to knock the ball down but those are play I see Saavy Vets like Aaron Rodgers make all the time.

L Miller: Looked fast, explosive

1st team defense looked good all the way around.

Phillips: Was constantly in the backfield, getting push and penetration. Need the LB's to react a little quicker though filling the gaps caused by Phillips penetration.

Fede Showed Up which is good to see he's being consistent.

Will Davis had a hell of a game. Always close to the ball when thrown his way and made a couple of good pass breakups and tackles.

It will be hard to keep R. Matthews off the field.

Landry: He's become one of those players in only year 2 that you expect to show up every game and produce.

Rashad Jones: Looked great. Made a tackle at the LOS and broke up a pass on 3rd down i believe.

Laron Byrd going deep and laid out wonderfully for the reception. I like his size and speed. But it will have to make more plays like that to stick. That 6th spot is going to be a tough battle between Byrd, Preston and Hazel

The Middle LB I think his name is Vigil? Was VERY ACTIVE in the middle. Made a great play on the Goaline to stop a dive over the top attempt and was constantly around the football. I'd like to see his read and react a bit quicker though.

#41 I think his name is Cedric Thompson, flashed a couple of times which is a good sign for a young player. Made a good tackle at the LOS on a Blitz and was in position to make a 4th down stop on the Goaline but a good block by the FB knocked him off balance a bit and he couldn't finish the play. I'd like to see him shed that block and make the stop however it was good recognition to close the immediate hole and take on the FB block to force the RB to stop his forward momentum and bounce it outside. Had he not done that the RB walks in the endzone untouched. The commentators said he should have made the play but they lost all credibility with me when they thought an encroachment penalty inside the 5 yard line would result in an automatic 1st down :-\ sheesh.

The Negatives

3rd team oline was bad. Which is why I am now on board with signing Mathis. If he comes in and is better than Thomas\Turner then you start Mathis and relegate the Thomas\Turner to the 2nd team. Then we would have a good backup in case of injury. (assuming Thomas and Turner continues playing well)

Backup WB's were decent to terrible: MBT started off good enough hitting a beautiful bomb to Byrd but after that he laid an egg. Moore wasn't much better and neither was Freeman. I really hope Tannehill doesn't get hurt.

Hazel got an opportunity to separate himself from the pack for that 6th WR spot but.... he didn't. Dropped on that was behind him quite a bit and stopped running on the fade route. Had he kept running he might have come down with the ball.

Bobby McCain has to learn to stop grabbing. If he's grabbing a hold of 2nd and 3rd teamers, how can we trust him to cover elite slot receivers like the TY hiltons of the world? I like his physical style but gotta fix the holding problems.

Anthony Damn Johnson.. Where do I start. I'm going to go ahead and give him an excuse for the 3 offside penalties. He's been working with Suh on snap anticipation and was working on that because it was a preseason game and if this was a real game he wouldn't have been doing that. I have no excuse however for the gaping hole in the middle of the dline when he was in there. Gotta play better young fella. Your Job may depend on it.

Overall, couldn't ask for a better start both offensively and defensively. Looking for to the next game hoping to see progress from the second-3rd teamers, better QB play after Tannehill.

OH WAIT I almost forgot... Lamike (as he wants to be called) did not have a good game. Those two drops...... not acceptable. Didn't do much to excite on special teams. With that said... I still think he's the second best back on this team in this system. He runs stronger than his size would indicate usually dragging a tackler or two with him for a couple of extra yards. He'll need a much better game next week to make the team.

we are in a position where jennings might not play as much as we thought. the wr's were really good and two of the top three didnt even play. if ma thews doesn't get a lot of pt it will a travesty. the guy can play, and should have played a lot more last year. if stills doesn't show up atleast we have Mathews.

As I was watching the game, I took a few notes on things (wouldn't go that far for a real game, but for now its fun to do), my thoughts lineup pretty closely with yours.

-I missed most of our first drive trying to find a reliable stream to use because most I couldn't even click off of ads... but I like to hear that our guard play was decent. Can't wait for Albert to be healthy, will help immensely. I like the ballsy move to go for it on the 4th and goal

-Our starting D played very well. Even once we started phasing in lesser players I thought they were still doing pretty good upfront.. thought Jamar Taylor played well. Some of their short grabs were just taking what we were giving them, coverage wise. remember, this is a very vanilla game.

-Will Davis looked A LOT better than I was expecting, Bobby McCain was getting grabby, but he's smart- he'll adjust to the nfl I think.. Bowman gave up a few solid catches, but had a couple good plays as well.. I didn't notice Aikens much. Thompson was in decent position a few times but missed the tackle(s). He can get better...

-about midway in the 2nd Q, we had in McLendon, Linkenbach, and Brenner in at least, didnt note the tackles or who was where... but LaMike James had not very much running room, dropped passes, but when he did have the ball in his hands, he fought hard for his yards imo. Damien Williams didnt do much, had some nice catches and some solic rac too. I'll be very intrigued seeing Ajayi get some carries and hopefully make them meaningful and not with 3rd/4th string players blocking for him. Gillislee had a very nice run, looked like Ronnie Brown out there, but wow kid, that fumble probably cost him his job on our team! Awful play!

-I don't think any of the receivers fighting for that possible 6th spot made much noise. (I consider DP, KS, JL, GJ, RM- the top 5 and locks). Hazel looked open at times, but had drop(s) and was outmuscled for a ball or two I think. Didn't see many targets go towards Preston, wish we would have.. Byrd had a nice catch but don't think he's done much in camp. Aultman didn't do much as a receiver but had a nice ~30 yd return at the very end of the game.

-We started to get gashed by their runs late in the game, it got cleaned up somewhat but it happens with bad players. Not sure who was out there exactly. Speaking of backups on D, they kept the penetration coming it felt like, Phillips sniffed out a screen but couldn't make the tackle, Hull eventually cleaned it up. Vigil was in on a lot it seemed like too. Maybe we keep them both? Thought I recall Paysinger getting burnt once but I'm not sure.

-They tried running Daniel Thomas at us... lol. Yeah, we've seen him enough to know what to do.

-Sam Acho, Sherrick McManis, and (surprisingly) Jimmy Clausen all played pretty good games for the Bears. It sucked getting a Bears broadcast of the game because they ONLY talked about them pretty much.

-It really sucks McCain and Tripp both got hurt. It helps the odds of the UDFA guys making the team though probably, since Misi is injury prone as hell too. I'm hoping for Vigil/Hull at the moment

Good overview. The depth was noncompetitive. Defense created no turnovers, offense scored no points, team lost 24-0. Worst ps loss since 1997. The suckage was real and deep. This also means that the offseason training and camp was noncompetitive. Thats a problem for T and H, big problem.

The drama and overreaction presented here is priceless.

I dont think so. We are talking about camp bodies, 90 men. I dont think its drama, performance was there for everyone to see and numbers are there for you to check.
This camp they assembled is the worst Ive seen. They dont belong, they are literally bush league.

I have to say I really expected more fight/plays from the 2nd and 3rd strings, since we've heard so much about how deep we are. I guess the youth really shows here - a lot of these guys are rooks or otherwise inexperienced players.

I completely disagree with you. This statement is a trigger happy over reaction from the 2nd half of the FIRST preseason game. The players they have brought in to fill out the TC roster have been no less skilled than other years. Perception is everything and you just caught them on a bad night..

You should stress that your are talking qbout the second half and about the guys who wont be on the team in a few weeks.

We were using third stringers in the first quarter. Literally we saw players 65 to 90 in the third quarter to put these guys in situations
To see if we can uncover a gem . . . But make no mistake, our top 45 is set. So u have 45 more guys battling for 8 spots.

Hickey and Tannenbaum have done an exceptional job.

Mathews is making this team and playing a good amount of snaps. Do we carry 6? Nobody made a good case hazel did have a chance as you said and dropped the ball too much. Bryd made a good case but it was only 1 play. Preston was none existent

Funny (??) Story... I watched parts of the 2nd game of NFLN last night. I boycotted one of the teams in the 1st (It wasn't Philbin's former employer).

They were talking about SD's home schedule. Fouts (the a--clown) pointed out the 12/20 game, how it typically goes to OT, & the Chargers prevail over the phins.

I guess Dan conveniently:idk: forgot about the curb stomping the phins laid on Rivers & co last yr?

i am very interested to see the bottom of the depth play against the Panthers. In that sense I agree my view is an overreaction right now going off one game.

Except it isn't really depth. Neither of the two QBs who played in the 2nd half are making the team. Countless members of the 3rd string who played with the two QBs aren't making the team either.

It means nothing. Just the same as if they scored 42 pts in the 2nd half.
