Round One - Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame
If Quinn slips past Detroit and the Browns, Miami will seal a trade to move ahead of Minnesota in order to land its QB of the future. Quinn, already skilled in a pro offense, has the size and intangibles that any team requires in its QB. With Trent Green soon to land in Miami, Quinn will have a year developing before taking over.
Round Two - (pick one) - Ryan Kalil, C, USC A talented player with excellent technique and plenty of experience. Should start from day one in Miami.
Round Two - (pick two) (via NE Pats - Welker trade) - Ben Grubbs, G, Auburn Outstanding athlete with excellent quickness. Hard worker and still improving.
Round Three - Quentin Moses, DE, Georgia Outstanding athlete and pass rusher who struggled throughout his senior season.
Round Four - HB Blades, LB, Pittsburgh
Not the usual size of a pro LB but vastly experienced and productive. Would learn a great deal from Zach and co. Team leader and hard working.
Round Six - (pick one) - Josh Gattis, S, Wake Forest
Good size and has playmaking ability. Interesting prospect who is always around the ball. Led the ACC in special teams tackles.
Round Six - (pick two) TRADED TO KC for QB Trent Green
Round Seven - (pick one) - Mike Walker, WR, Central Florida
Good size and speed. Makes all the tough catches over the middle. Runs good routes. Durability is a concern though but should become a solid pro.
Round Seven - (pick two) (via STL Rams - Donnie Jones) - Courtney Brown, CB, Cal-Poly Brown has excellent size and speed. Comes from a small uni but has lots of potential and can also contribute on special teams.
Round Seven - (pick three) (via NE Pats - Welker trade) - Mike Otto, T, Purdue A developmental pick. Good size and feet and the nasty demeanour that coaches like in the hogs.
With this draft Miami gets its franchise QB that is has craved ever since Marino hung up his cleats. Two new offensive linemen, to protect Green and then Quinn, that should both go on to have long pro careers. Mike Otto would be expected to develop over two seasons before challenging for a playing spot. Mike Walker should challenge for the fourth receiving spot and could contribute on special teams.
Moses, Gattis, Brown and Blades will be expected to contribute in certain defensive situations as well as special teams. Blades is the heir to Zach Thomas. Moses will challenge Matt Roth to start opposite JT and could replace him when he retires. Gattis and Brown will challenge for spots within the secondary and could become key parts of dime and nickel packages.
Miami's weakness is the offense and in particular, the offensive line. Cameron has already stated that the line will be addressed during the draft, remembering how San Diego re-stocked its o-line the same way. This should solidify the offense in the long term.
