The way I see it. The Fins have needs at several positions. We can't address all of them through the draft in one year. But we can come close.
Let me start by saying who I'm happy with...
I'm happy with our punter, Donnie Jones.
I'm happy with our safeties, Bell and Jason Allen (for now).
I'm happy with our RBs, Ronnie and Ricky (if he doesn't fail another drug test).
I'm happy with our DTs, Vonnie Holliday and Evans or Rod Wright.
I'm happy with our OGs, Hadnot (draft a C and move him back) and Shelton,
or Kris Dielman (if and when we get him).
I'd like to get rid of McMichael. But as long as he stays, there's no reason to draft a TE, especially not in this year's draft.
Every other position needs an upgrade. These are the names I'm hoping to hear in April...
LT
1st - Levi Brown, Penn St
3rd - Ryan Harris, ND
How important is a left tackle? The last time we won the AFC East, Richmond Webb was our LT. Coincidence? You tell me. Also, consider how many QBs, RBs, and WRs are busts. But very few Top Ten LTs are ever a bust.
Forget Joe Staley. Too many negatives. But Charlie Weis said there is no question that Ryan Harris can play left tackle in the NFL. That's good enough for me. Especially if we end up getting Brady Quinn.
QB
1st - Brady Quinn, ND
2nd - Drew Stanton, Michigan St
2nd or 3rd - Trent Edwards, Stanford
QB is a unique situation. Personally, I think Culpepper is going to bounce back. Not everybody agrees I know. But I think we can all agree that Culpepper is injury-prone. He's only played all 16 games twice in his entire career. So even if he does bounce back, at the very least we need a capable backup to fill in for any games Culpepper will miss due to injury. For that reason alone, we need to draft a QB.
I don't like all the negative chatter surrounding Brady Quinn. And Drew Stanton can run. Stanton would be a better fit as far as a backup for Culpepper goes.
CB
2nd - Aaron Ross, Texas
2nd - Daymeion Hughes, Cal
3rd - Tarell Brown, Texas
3rd - Fred Bennett, South Carolina
3rd - Eric Wright, UNLV
4th - Josh Wilson, Maryland
4th - David Irons, Auburn
6th or 7th - Tim Mixon, Cal (could be the steal of the draft)
We don't have anybody who can match up with the best WRs in the league. Maybe one of these guys is the answer.
WR
1st - Ted Ginn, Ohio St
1st - Dwayne Jarrett, USC
2nd - Sidney Rice, South Carolina
2nd or 3rd - Anthony Gonzalez, Ohio St.
3rd - Jason Hill, Washington St.
3rd - Craig Davis, LSU
3rd - Yamon Figurs, Kansas State
4th - David Clowney, Virginia Tech
4th - Brandon Myles, West Virginia
WR isn't our biggest need. And there is too much talent in the later rounds to use our 1st round pick on a WR unless his name is Calvin Johnson, or we trade down.
Center
2nd - Ryan Kalil, USC
3rd or 4th - Samson Satale, Hawaii
3rd or 4th - Doug Datish, Ohio St
4th - Kyle Young, Fresno State
4th - Leroy Harris, NC State
6th or 7th- Dan Mozes, WVU
6th or 7th- Dustin Fry, Clemson
This draft is super deep as far as the Center position goes. We can easily pick up really good one in the 4th.
LB
2nd - Paul Posluszny, Penn St
2nd - Buster Davis, FSU
2nd - Brandon Siler, Florida
3rd - Rufus Alexander, Oklahoma
3rd - Earl Everett, Florida
3rd or 4th - Antwan Barnes, FIU
3rd or 4th - Tim Shaw, Penn St
3rd or 4th - Quincy Black, New Mexico
4th - Prescott Burgess, Michigan
4th - Juwan Simpson, Alabama
ZT ain't getting any younger. And we may (hopefully) lose Spragan to free agency.
DE
2nd - Anthony Spencer, Purdue
3rd - Lamarr Woodley, Michigan (if he's still on the board)
3rd - Dan Bazuin, Central Michigan
3rd - Jay Moore, Nebraska
4th or 6th - David Patterson, Ohio St (I really like this guy and he would be a great fit for us. Wish we had a 5th round pick.)
We need an eventual replacement for JT. But next year's draft might be the best time to do that. That being said, it would be hard to pass up some of these guys if they're the BPA when we pick.
FB
4th or 6th - Jason Snelling, Virginia
4th or 6th - Le’Ron McClain, Alabama
We might lose Darian Barnes to free agency. Then again, we might not.
K
3rd - Mason Crosby, Colorado
4th or 6th - Justin Medlock, UCLA
7th or UFA - Nick Folk, Arizona
7th or UFA - Brandon Pace, Virginia Tech
7th or UFA - Jesse Ainsworth Arizona St.
7th or UFA - Andrew Wellock, Eastern Michigan
We can't pass up Crosby if he's available in the 3rd. If we draft Medlock in the 4th that tells you all you need to know about Mare's status. If we don't get Crosby or Medlock, I probably wouldn't draft a PK in the 7th. Just pick up an undrafted free agent.
