I want to start off by saying that I trust the Parcell's regime and really would n't be outraged with any of the top picks that most people are talking about at 1. These guys know allot more then I (and believe it or not you) do. That being said here is my dream draft for the fins. I'm not saying it WILL happen like allot of people say with their plans, and in fact I know it is highly unlikely so don't bombard me with tons of posts saying it never will. I'm just wondering if anybody else thinks there is a small chance of any of it happening.
I think Gholston, Ryan, McFadden and Dorsey are already out of legitimate pcik talks in within the Dolphins circle. Gholston has the physical ability to be the next Merrimen, but lacks polish and the 100% drive on every play(like Chris has). Parcells won't put up with somebody who takes plays off. I believe Ryan is more likely than than the others on my ruled out list, but still don't see it happening. First of all, QBs have the highest rate of busting(to many variables to judge) and you don't want to give a HUGE contract to somebody who will likely bust. He also threw too many picks last year. It was most likely due to lack of team talent around him, but lets be honest what is he going to be playing with in Miami. Parcells hates turnovers and won't risk the money on him. Also they wouldn't have brought in McKown if he was going to have to beat out 2 young guys, and with the guys around him Becks performance last year should really be thrown out. McFadden is the most explosive weapon in the draft, and with a decent team around him could make a big splash( not nearly as big as petersons) next year. Yet, I believe HB is one of the lower spots on the team need list. The latest reports have Brown being healthy by training camp and before his injury he was really tearing things up last year with virtually no help. Along with one time league leading rusher Ricky and the promising 3rd down back Booker it doesn't make sense to pick an HB with so many bigger team needs. Also HBs have the shortest shelf life of any position and with a good team around him and a good system almost any athletic back can be plugged in and big result will be obtained (denver). The last guy on this list I really like, Glenn Dorsey. If the fins were gonna stay in a 4-3 scheme this would deffinetly be my first pick but there not. Parcells is a 3-4 guy, and dorsey is not the ideal size for a 3-4. He also has some injury concerns which have been blown way out of proportion by the media, but it is still something to think about.
That brings us to the two big names most being talked about, the Longs. I personally like Chris allot more. The bottom line is he is the kind of player that can lead the entire team and completely change games, while tackles are important how often do they take over games? He is a real Parcells kind of guy. The Giants showed last year that a solid DL is the most important group on the team( i dont consider QB to be a group). Even a great QB can be nutralized with a constant pass rush. There are two reasons being used by many to say why he isn't worth the first overall pick. First of all is his 40, which Ill admit whas mediocre, but his quick burst agility is really great and he seems to play allot faster on tape than he ran (Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith had crappy 40 times, but look at how they out ran people). The other thing that seems to be brought up constantly is team need. I'm sick of it. The truelly great teams take the better players really regadless of team need in most situations. Lets look at the OLB in our supposed 3-4 scheme. JT and porter, two solid starters, you aren't going to get anything different from me, but how long are either of those players going to be around. Not very Long(no pun intended). Taylor's offeseason activity has clearly shown he has his sites set on retireing soon and making the move to show business, and I don't think Parcells wants that kind of guy to be the leader of this team. Even if he does continue to play well for a couple of years, by the time we have finished rebuilding and are making a run at the playoffs he will deffienetly be reitered. This is the last year JT will have any value in trades and Parcells knows it. I have heard they are asking for a 2nd and 4th round pick in return, but they will most likely only get a 2nd. I'll take Chris and the best Tackle available in a very deep class in round two over Jake and Taylor(for only a year or two).
My biggest problem with Long is his feet. While I do believe he will be a pro bowl calliber RT, he will never be a great LT and RTs have far less value than LTs. Yes, it does fill our biggest need, but this is the deepest most talented tackle class in maybe a decade. There are guys to be found in the second round. I'm sick of hearing the comparison to the Browns turn around with Jake. The bottom line is Jake isn't as good as Joe thomas and they have allot more offensive talent around him than Jake would have. Jake could give up zero sacks all of next year(which he won't) and it wouldn't make as big an impact as many people are stating he will. So why are the fins negotiating with him now? It's all a smoke screen. The Rams have wanted Jake for some time now and now the fins have a possible(but not likely) trade. How great would it be to swap picks, get the guy they really wanted at a lower price and pick up a second rounder in the process. Recent history has shown us teams rarely sign the first guy they talk to.
With that being said hear is what I would give my right arm to see happen April 26-27:
Round 1: pick number 2-(aquired from STL in return for 1st selcetion) pick Chris Long in scenario I described above
Round 2: pick 32, 57(from chargers) and the two picks gained from the Taylor trade and trade with the Rams-That gives the fins 4 second round picks!!!! Not taking Jake means there is still a big hole at OT. So one of these picks has to be a tackle and one has to be a guard also because we don't have a LG right now. Then I think the remaining two picks should be on the highest ranked CB and WR. We lack a true number one corner and have nobody to line up with Ginn. Obviosly if a big name player falls to 32 then I would suggest picking him and taking one of these needs in the third.
Round 3: pick 64- This is the first pick of day two which means it may be traded away as the other 31 teams will have all night to think about it. I would like to see that happen, but if not go with either a LB or TE. Torbor maybe able to fill in at MLB, but I wouldn't mind having a back up plan and TE has been horrible sicne the departure of McMicheal. I would rather see TE here (preferabl somebody that can block for beck). Maybe QB is possible if a high ranked guy falls here.
Round 4: pick 100-get either LB or TE, which ever not addressed in 3rd round
Remaining four picks-Best player available
