My take on our opening day roster

I just saw the Patriots are unlikely to pick up Sony Michel's 5'th year option. I think he would be a terrific option this year for us.

No way that they'll pick that up on a part time RB.

They may resign him to a lesser contract, however.

The Foster signing still stumps me... of all the guys we signed, he seems to have the longest shot of sticking. It's almost like we decided to sign him just in case we didn't draft any receivers.

Now... if he can win the punt or kick returner job (or both), then maybe we'll have something.
Yes, kind of seems redundant but he had a promising rookie year. Also, has experience with Tua.

First of all, there are only 3 or 4 spots in play this year, most of the roster is set barring injury or training camp melt-down.

As you can see, I've left a number of current Dolphins off the roster. I can't see Smythe, Munson, Eguvoen, Grant, Pankey, or Hollins as actual prospects to make this team unless there are injuries (and maybe not then). I know that some of these guys have been around awhile, but we're better now... it's time to thank them for their service and let them move on.

The guys listed in red are the targets. They better stay healthy and hope none of the UDFAs shine.

If I've inadvertantly left anyone off, I'm sure someone will let me know and I'll adjust this.

Eichenberg's technique seems to be the strongest in the passing game. Hunt is our best lineman, and excels very good in the run. Keeping him in the inside is best. Waddle is expected to line up in the slot, but the word slot, x, and etc is thrown around way too much now a days. Is very possible that Miami will run a lot of three receiver sets, single tight end, singleback sets. Or they can line up the tight end in the slot, and waddle as an x in some play calls. Bottom line is that we brought in Waddle to contribute, make defenders miss, catch and run in tight spots. A role that we attempted to use Jakeem Grant with in a way, but a lot more expanded with our play calling.

Maybe back up to Fuller. Couple on finheaven have said Fuller is injured alot...

I would pass jmo, gaskin is better.

That is pretty close to spot on.

I think Grant would make it over Wilson, but you could be right. Foster actually might make it over both of those guys. The wide receiver battle will be very interesting.

you have to think that Hollins or Foster will make the team as a gunner, right?

Bobby McCain and Eric Rowe are both Cornerbacks playing Safety.

Not that there's anything wrong with that (especially if you're Rod Woodson, late in your career).

But I have the feeling that if two actual Safeties shoe up (Brandon Jones and Jevon Holland, maybe?), neither guy will be starting any more.
Don't forget at NE it was customary for supposed safeties to play CB and vice versa. They liked guys with that kind of flexibility and it looks very much as though Miami is going the same way. So i don't think the fact they're ex CBs is a point against them, i just think Boyer and Flores feel their secondary can be a lot better.

When you look at how it fared against winning teams, it's hard not to agree with them. Byron Jones for me was as big an issue as Needham or McCain, but there's no touching him with that contract in 2021-22.

I believe Holland will start out in the slot and maybe play robber if we set up that way sometimes. Coleman and Needham dime and backup unless they really press their case in TC.

Brandon Jones and Igbo? Igbo will understudy on the boundary i think and Jones will push Rowe for a start.

Starting FS to be McCain/Hooker if signed with Holland in the wings to take over asap and send Coleman to the slot, Nik to dime.

Having a TE coach as co-OC, with Gesicki on the roster as a pure flex and our oline probably still needing inline TE help, a lot points towards a heavy dose of 12 personnel with Long inline.

Will be interesting to see what combos of WRs take the field when they play two TEs. Waddle and Fuller could really open up the middle for the TEs. Godsey is salivating.

More empty backfield also?

One revision I'd make is Wilson is gone and Malcolm Perry sticks.
Since Perry is listed as a RB/WR, maybe they will stash Doaks on the practice squad and use his spot for Perry and keep Wilson.

Nice! I am guessing you are pretty close to what we will have. On paper, we are beginning to look like a damn good team! I am curious as to how this will leave us salary cap wise.

I've got LB on the list for our possible 1st draft pick next year.

Baker may leave, McKinney is on a one year trial, and Van Ginkle looks like a good, but not great player.

I know that the NFL has devalued the position, but if we can secure a 3 down, star linebacker with the right personality who can call the defensive plays... we've got our target.
It's early, but 2022 could be mostly a defensive draft.
