My take on our opening day roster

@Feverdream Wow great thread.
It's nice to see how the roster has been built up in a relatively short amount of time.
And when you look at it, there are still players, who although they contribute and play well, could still in the next two years be targeted for an upgrade. RB jumps out, LB. Curious now about whether Gesicki will be a target for re-sign. If not, true TE's could be a future target also.
As far as Foster- I think with his speed you bring him in and see what he's got. With WIlliams' injury history, if Foster balls out somehow, it creates a decision.

First of all, there are only 3 or 4 spots in play this year, most of the roster is set barring injury or training camp melt-down.

As you can see, I've left a number of current Dolphins off the roster. I can't see Smythe, Munson, Eguvoen, Grant, Pankey, or Hollins as actual prospects to make this team unless there are injuries (and maybe not then). I know that some of these guys have been around awhile, but we're better now... it's time to thank them for their service and let them move on.

The guys listed in red are the targets. They better stay healthy and hope none of the UDFAs shine.

If I've inadvertantly left anyone off, I'm sure someone will let me know and I'll adjust this.

This is DAMN good! I think you nail the opening day roster assuming we don't grab a post-june cut.

Excellent job on this!

I read something about Miami potentially using a 3 TE set more this year. Apparently Miami has made some changes to the offense which will incorporate more TE usage? They may keep 5 TE's, if this turns out to be true.

Also the forgotten man in Johnathan Ledbetter, who Flores has kept around on IR for 2 seasons, shouldn't be discounted. He started the opening game, at DE in 2019. They obviously like him. But he needs to show he's finally healthy and ready to play in 2021, because it could be his final chance?

You can at least cite my work while using it to start a new thread...

You left out Hooker!! 😜

Ed Sullivan has entered the building...

and you are 100% correct on McCain and Rowe.
There’s a reason that we drafted a true Safety very high and had another one in for a visit yesterday. I predict that both McCain and Rowe are gone.

Well done @Feverdream . I quibble about the order of some positions, like RB where only Gaskins and Ahmed are safe IMHO, but it's a very good list. My quibbles are few.

I think Smythe Bowden, Biegel, and maybe Perry all stick, and I'm hoping Strowbridge develops and makes it. I think Wilson, is gone, and Long, Doaks, Brown, Carter, Riley, Scarlett, Coleman and McCain are all on the bubble. Obviously, the big question is how the S's shake out. I'm guessing we want insurance for injuries at DB so we churn some of those end of roster guys through the active roster, inactive roster, practice squad, and if necessary, give 'em a few weeks off until injuries pop up. But, I think the staff wants to keep all of them and piece together a unit from those guys and maybe one late cut.

One thing about the Patriot Way that was brought over from New England, they legitimately give lots of newcomers chances, and that attracts quality UDFA types. If they nail their auditions, they can genuinely make the team, so we end up cutting a lot of guys to make room and don't waste too much time hanging onto the Dallas Thomas types of the world who always have potential but never develop into good players. Produce or you get cut. Show up and produce, you make the team. Our OL and DB positions are perfect examples of this, and I am very grateful we've wised up to the fact that paying for potential is a fools game in today's free agency driven NFL and early exits from collegiate training.

The receiver battle is by far the most intriguing.

I know people have Allen Hurns as an auto cut, but his contract makes that tricky. His cap hit will be hit harder if he’s cut, then on the roster. Something to watch.

Albert Wilson is 50/50. He’s a qb friendly weapon whe healthy, but he’s barely played for the team in 2 seasons. And the team will get trade calls on Jakeem Grant. And elite special teams play is high priority for Flores, so that will play a role in the last couple spots.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the thread, and I know others have produced these early roster guesses, so this was just my attempt and guesswork on the subject. I do these every year, and I don't think I've EVER gotten one 100% correct, but I do think this year's roster might be one of the more obvious ones that we've ever had.

Yes, there will be a couple of misses on my part, but I think that we are starting to see how Flores and Grier think here. The contracts they hand out are pretty good indicators sometimes... Beigel got vet minimum, while Robert's got 650k guaranteed, even though both are coming off injuries.
Foster only got 100k guaranteed, so it's clearly a trial payment. Butler got more, so he sticks barring abject failure.

I think the contract values give us a good read.

Last year in Free Agency, we signed one... ONE contract without an easy out, Byron Jones. He was the ONE player we viewed as foundational, all the rest were rentals, but just like a rental... if you pay a big deposit, you are gonna be there for a year.

This year, we didn't sign ANY contracts that were keepers, but we did sign about 5 contracts with million dollar plus deposits... and those guys are gonna stay-- barring complete camp meltdown.

So putting together a roster is easier for a fan.

It's going to be hard for the local press to write dramatic stories about which vet will stick, because those decisions have mostly be made already.

What we are going to do with the practice squad is a much, much more open situation.

Have the PS rules changed? Its hard to keep up with those side rules. But I'd like to see go if possible:

Pankey, Coleman, Laird, Perry, Ahmed, Merritt

Ledbetter, Perry
