After seeing multiple threads from people writing out their 2010 off-season plan, I figured I would give it a try. The main difference you will see with my post, is that it's a prediction, not a "Wish List" or "Madden Exercise".
After seeing a team struggle to stop most offenses they played, this FO will primarily focus on Defense in the off-season. What I want to do is start by talking about what WON'T happen this off-season.
If there is a chance a WR falls into their lap that they didn't expect, I think the FO will get on it, but I don't see a WR falling into their lap. In my opinion, WR becomes a 2011 initiative. Brandon Marshall either stays with the Broncos or some team gives up at least a 2nd round pick for him (potentially even a 1st). I think he's worth a 2nd, but I don't see the FO giving up a 2nd for a guy that has always been a locker room menace. Miles Austin does NOT leave Dallas...No way, No how. He is their new "Star" (pun intended), they won't just let him walk. VJ will be re-signed, the Chargers did not let this guy develop for the last 3 years to see him just walk. Bryant will either be re-signed by the Bucs or he will go for pretty big $ in FA just based on the fact that he will be the only good to very good WR out there in FA.
On to MLB. Dansby will not be signed by the Phins. He will be one of, if not the biggest, FA out there. He will get paid and this FO will not be the one paying for him. Parcells has always been known for not bringing in Huge $ FA's.
For the DT's, Wilfork will either demand one of the biggest DT salary's in the league (think Haynesworth) or he will be re-signed by the Pats. He will not be a Dolphin. The 49ers guy and Hampton will re-sign with the 9ers and Steelers. Pickett is out there, but I think Parcells would rather go after a DT in the draft. Unfortunately, this could be on the Top of his list, so we may either see a trade down in the 1st or one of those potential mid to late 1st round projected DT's taken by Bill with the 12th pick (my 1st round draft projection is below).
FS is the only position that this FO may try to make a splash with in FA whether it be Otogwe (not sure if he will be franchised again or if he will be a RFA if no CBA is reached) or Rolle could be looked at if he is cut. I personally think a FS will be drafted in the 3rd - 5th round and Clemons will fight it out with that drafted FS. I don't think this is the best solution b/c this was a huge hole for the D this year and hard to say if Clemons is the solution. The other option is maybe moving Will Allen to FS. Not sure how he would do their, but he is making too much money to be a Nickel CB.
OLB will be a highly sought out position for the Phins and we may see some serviceable FA's brought in to fight with Wake, JT, Charlie Anderson, etc. Similar to when Torbor and Ayodle were brought in at ILB 2 years ago. Also, as stated before, I could see Merling given a shot to play OLB if he can lose some weight.
As for where this FO lands in FA, I think we have to be realistic and assume that no REAL big names will be brought in. It's not how the FO works. They build through the draft. My opinion is we will bring Foote in along with some other serviceable YOUNG guys that have shown potential on their respective teams. Again, look at previous years - Torbor, Ayodele, Gibril, Wilford, etc. I don't think this is the best strategy just based off of the lack of success the FO has had with this strategy, but I don't think they move away from it.
As for cuts, Porter and Gibril are probably going to get cut (as long as no CBA is reached) along with Pennington, Will Allen (if he is NOT moved to FS), and lastly Ferguson probably retires. Ginn will only get cut or traded if we are able to bring in another return guy OR we can bring in a #1 WR.
Through the draft, I see us either moving down or drafting a DT with the 1st pick. Not sexy, but it's a need that is critical when using the 3-4.
You should see lots of Defense being taken in this draft.
I don't have much on individual players in the draft, b/c that's not my forte, but I think my FA and Cuts lists are pretty realistic. I also love thinking about getting all of these big name FA and making crazy trades, but it's just not how it's done in the NFL and primarily with the group we have running our FO.
Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.
