Mystery Interviewee - Saints Dc Dennis Allen

Hey, **** it, I did my own research. Basically, .222 is an extraordinarily bad winning percentage. If Allen had finished his third season as a head coach, he would have qualified for PFR's rate statistics as a head coach.

Of all coaches who have gotten more than two seasons since the merger, the worst were:

1. Hue Jackson .088 in 40 games
2. Bill Arnsparger (Arnie, no!) .200 in 35 games
3. Rod Marinelli .208 in 48 games
4. Steve Spagnuolo .208 in 48 games
5. Dennis Allen .222 in 36 games
6. Gus Bradley .226 in 62 games
7. J.D. Roberts .227 in 35 games
8. Dick LeBeau .267 in 45 games
9. David Shula .268 in 71 games
10. Abe Gibron .274 in 42 games
11. Kay Stephenson .278 in 36 games
12. Frank Kush .288 in 40 games
13. Mike Riley .292 in 48 games
14. Scott Linehan .306 in 36 games
15. Dave Campo .313 in 48 games

And exactly one of these gentlemen got a second head coaching job after their extremely disastrous (i.e. sub 30% win rate) seasons: Steve Spagnuolo! Spags got the job as the Giants' interim head coach in 2017 after going 10-38 as the coach of the Rams. He went 1-3 as the interim coach of the Giants. Guess that's not really a fair comparison.

So I dug a little deeper and I realized we have a failed head coach in the NFL right under our noses! Pat Shurmur! Pat Shurmur was a rather bad 9-23 as head coach of the Browns, good for a winning rate of .281. Shurmur was then appointed head coach of the New York Giants in the 2018 offseason and led the Giants to a... drumroll please... 5-11 record. A winning rate of .313.

Really, we must all commend and thank the New York Football Giants for hiring Pat Shurmur as their head coach in 2018 after making Spags their interim coach the previous year. Without the 2017-2018 Giants, we simply wouldn't have any data on what happens with sub .300 coaches who get a second head coaching gig in the NFL. And thanks to the Giants, we now at least have a sample size of 20 games to conclude that unusually bad coaches tend to continue getting unusually bad results with a second chance.

This was actually a pretty cool dive.

If the Saints keep this up Allen may be hired tomorrow
