A rain out where NOTHING HAPPENED drew higher ratings than Kobe-Lebron and some golf. That shows such the sad state of the NBA and its current product. Other networks will now counter-program NBA games with a test pattern! Anyway, here is the write up below.

NASCAR on FOX's rain-out coverage Sunday from Atlanta Motor Speedway posted higher ratings than the NBA and PGA.

The Hollywood Hotel's extended rain broadcast with Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond proved to be more popular than an NBA matchup between Kobe Bryant and LeBron James and the final round of a PGA event.

Sunday’s rain coverage generated a 3.3/7 overnight rating according to Nielsen Media Research, enough to beat head-to-head competition from a Lakers vs. Cavs NBA game on ABC by +39% (3.3/7 vs. 2.0/4) and the final round of the PGA’s Bay Hill Invitational on NBC by +18% (3.3/7 vs. 2.7/6).

So does this mean the NASCAR demographic is larger than the urban or old white man with money demographic?

NASCAR is, at this point, the third most popular spectator sport in the US and might pass baseball soon. They've done a tremendous job of marketing the product and moving beyond the Southern redneck audience.

I will add, however, that a NASCAR rain delay is infinitely more entertaining than watching golf.

Southern Redneck audience

Yeah, thats just the demographic that built it to what it is......and its still the backbone. But maybe that explains its mass appeal and marketability.

I enjoy the tailgating more than the race sometimes....and it doesnt bother me a bit to see rebel flags flying anymore than it bothers me to rent a portajohn for my group for 80 bucks for the day

The NBA was so much better in the 1970's/1980's...now it is a lazy bunch of whining crybaby millionaires. Golf and NASCAR is not much better.

i don't think it's as much of a negative against the NBA as it is a positive for NASCAR. i can't stand either sport (using "sport" loosely with nascar), so i don't understand watching either.

thats exactly why college is so much better. College players give 3 times the amount of energy and heart than a NBA player, and what for? Their school and teammates...not a paycheck and endorsement deal.

Now they market to rednecks from NY to California. Nascar may soon overtake the NFL....takes the hicks a little while to realize most of the players under those masks are black.

Nothing will takeover the NFL soon, or later for that matter.. NFL football pratically pays for it's self just through the money they make of the TV deal..

I stil think NFL will be number 1 for a while. But NASCAR is for sure number 2.
