• No surprise here as the Dolphins announced they had signed Long on Tuesday. The pick is a safe choice under new personnel chief Bill Parcells' regime that fills a clear need. New coach Tony Sparano said the Dolphins will play Long at left tackle, which likely allows Vernon Carey to switch to the right side. Long's addition to the offensive line could bolster the Dolphins' quest for stability at quarterback, after the team started three players under center last season.

USA Today

• The Dolphins took the safe route with this pick. The selection makes sense because the team can ill afford to make a mistake. Plus, second-year QB John Beck needs somebody to protect his blind side.

Sporting News

• Long may not have been the best player on the Dolphins' board, but he was the most signable, and should do at least an adequate job at left tackle right away.

Kansas City Star

• If you were looking for suspense, you came to the wrong place. I think they signed the guy to a long-term contract during halftime at the Capital One Bowl.

Baltimore Sun

• The Dolphins signed the huge tackle days before the draft. Long will couple with Vernon Carey to form a physical tackle tandem. The Dolphins had major needs along the offensive line, and this allows them to focus on skill positions and pass rushers through the rest of the draft. Quarterback and wide receiver are now priorities.

Rivals.com

• It was the safe pick. You can never go wrong getting a tackle in the first round who will be a starter for 10 years.

CBS Sports

• By now, most people around the NFL know that Miami boss Bill Parcells built his retirement home near Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York. Being a horseplayer, the Tuna had the perfect Long entry with the first overall pick. Jake Long was No. 1 and Chris Long was No. 1A. Basically, the Dolphins negotiated potential contracts with both Longs, although the Michigan offensive tackle was their first choice. If Jake didn't take the offer, then Parcells would have selected Howie's oldest son, Chris.
