DAVIE, Fla. -- A scary sight for an opposing offensive lineman came to fruition Tuesday in the Miami Dolphins' first organized team activities.
Defensive linemen Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake -- two dominant Pro Bowlers -- lined up next to each other for the first time in practice and wreaked havoc on Miami's offensive line. Dolphins starting tailback Lamar Miller had three carries early in team drills and couldn’t find rushing lanes, as Suh was in Miami’s backfield and often disrupted plays.
Miami’s defensive line also pushed the pocket and made things uncomfortable for Dolphins starting quarterback (and new $96 million man) Ryan Tannehill. Miami's defensive line made an early statement against its offensive line.
Led by Suh and Wake, this is a group that could be a dominant force and the Dolphins’ best unit this upcoming season.
“The sky is always going to be the limit for us,” Suh said Tuesday. “Anybody who lines up next to me and whoever I line up next to...at the end of the day, we always want to be somebody’s nightmare. We always want to cause havoc no matter who is on the field. That’s our job. That is what we are here to do.”
Wake and Suh are both coming off Pro Bowl seasons. Wake led the Dolphins with 11.5 sacks, while Suh had 8.5 sacks with the Detroit Lions in 2014. Miami signed Suh to a $114 million contract this offseason, which is an NFL record for a defensive player.
Suh brings a much-needed physical identity to Miami's defense. The group fell apart in the final six games last season and finished 24th against the run. The Lions, with Suh as the anchor, was the NFL’s No. 1 run defense in 2014.
Wake has faced a lot of double-teams during his career with the Dolphins. It's early, but with Suh lining up next to Wake, there should be more one-on-one matchups for both players to take advantage of.
“It’s coming together,” Wake said of his rapport with Suh. “I can definitely see the talent level. The guy [Suh] is an amazing football player. I just go out there and try to keep up.”
