This is what we need: Offensive linemen.
Calvin Johnson is not even in the top three recievers that could possibly be in this draft. There is
Jeff Samardzija,
Aundrae Allison, and Ted Ginn Jr. Calvin Johnson is a late first but a solid second round choice. However, he could even slip from there. We are much better off taking a Joe Thomas or Levi Brown. We need an OL not just to project Daunte but to open holes for Ronnie. After we draft an OL in the first round we should look LB in the second and Earl Everett comes right to mind for me. He is going to be solid in the NFL and already has experience with Channing Crowder. Third round we should go for a value guy. There are always first and second rounders who fall to the third and fourth rounds where we can steal them. Plain and simple, Calvin Johnson is not a need at this point.
Calvin Johnson blows those other guys away.....
Of that group......
Johnson is the biggest/most physical: The only WR listed that has comparable size is Jeff Samardzja. Johnson is 6'4 (closer to 6'5 IMO) 230 pounds, Jeff Samardzja is
listed at 6'5, but if you stand Calvin Johnson up to Jeff Samardzja......they would be the same height. Calvin Johnson is 235 pounds, while Samardzja is listed at 218. Johnson is as physical as TO, but has the size of Randy Moss. Edge: Calvin Johnson
Jump balls: Everybody is amazed at Randy Moss' ability to get jumpballs.......they haven't seen Calvin Johnson. Throw the ball up, and Calvin Johnson will get it. Samardzja has the size, but he doesn't have the 'ups' that Calvin Johnson does. Edge Calvin Johnson
Hands: Calvin Johnson has the best hands in the draft; nobody else even compares. He'll make the easy catches, he'll make the circus catches......he has excellent concentration.
Speed: Ted Ginn Jr. has great speed, but it's mostly deep speed. His speed is still good inside 20 yards, but it takes him awhile to hit his top speed. Ted Ginn Jr. is excellent and making something out of nothing, and he'll make a fine WR but he's not consistant. Ginn is also an excellent special teamer because of his escape ability (jukes/spins/stop and go..).
Calvin Johnson has great speed (and probably better acceleration), and Johnson does have excellent ball carrier vision......but it would be physically impossible for a 235 pound WR to match Ginn's ability to make something out of nothing. Calvin Johnson is only 50-55 pounds heavier. Their speed is comparable, so Edge: even. Escape ability/agility: Ted Ginn Jr.
Ted Ginn Jr. will have a great game, and then have 3 or 4 mediocre (at best) games. Calvin Johnson is more consistant because he's got it all. Every attribute Calvin Johnson has, is amazing. Give him a cushion, he'll make you pay, play bump and run.......he'll make you pay. He's as physical as TO, he's got the hands of Torry Holt, he can go deep like Randy Moss, and he can also go up and get the ball like Randy Moss.
Make no mistake about it......Calvin Johnson is very special.
