In this pre-free agency period, there is a lot of speculation going on regarding who we will get in free agency and the draft. Fact of the matter is, there are 2 categories of players, players that fans want and players that the team needs!

Though we are in a lot better position this year than last, I think everyone agrees that we are still not in a position to use our draft picks on luxuries. That is why the areas of need should be addressed first and foremost.

Here is what I classify as an area of need for the 2009 Miami Dolphins as of right now and who I can see filling these voids.

1. Safety. We currently have 0 starting caliber safties on our team! When you look at the impacts that players like ed reed and troy polumalu make, that is not a good thing. This is not to say we need those players, but we do need someone that can play the position at a high level! Players that I can see filling this void: yeremiah bell has the potential to be a game changer when healthy, oj otagwe maybe be a bit expensive. Draft eligible: louis delmas and rashad johnson. William moore is falling fast and has the potential to be a bargain with our second pick of the second round, but this may be a luxury and too risky for a team that can't affford to not get starters with their first three picks.

2. Right Tackle. With vernon carey a free agent, we need someone on the right side of the line. Fact of the matter is, the only upgrade that we could get would be jordan gross and he would be expensive. We need to resign Carey. We can't afford for our line to regress from last year! Carey is a solid rt with durability. Gross may be too expensive. Draft options: britton at 25 or loadholt in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. Our best bet is to lock carey up long term.

3. Center. It is common knowledge at this point that satelle won't be our starting center next year and there is nobody else on the roster that can take over. He is physically dominated by bigger nose tackles and overpowered by most teams. Granted he may not have gotten a fair shake with so much inconsistency and inexperience playing next to him, but that doesn't change the fact that he won't be our center. Jason brown is the logical replacement because he is young and proven. Getting this guy would allow us to move satelle to guard and give us depth at both center and guard that we desperately need. Also, the trifecta loves brown as a center option. If we can't get him the other options include alex mack, unger, caldwell and wood in the draft. Caldwell would be my preference.

4. Inside lInebacker. Everyone saw how exposed we were inside against kc when crowder was out and we can't afford to go into the season with just ayodele and torbor as our ilb. Being that it doesn't sound like we will be resigning crowder, other options include bart scott, karlos dansby may be a bit on the expensive side. The draft includes maualuga who won't be around at 25, laurenitis who doesn't fit our system, maybe cushing or mathews.

5. Cornerback. We have will allen and....exactly. With goodman not resigned we have a need at cornerback. Resigning goodman is an option, leigh bodden may be able to be had for cheaper, the likes of alphonso smith and dj moore are draft considerations, and mcfadden from pittsburgh would be nice.

6. Outside linebacker. Outside of porter, our pass rush was nonexistant. This certainly didn't help our secondary which was exposed because of the lack of pressure on the qurterback. Cameron wake may help us, but that is still a question mark. Even if he does excel we are going to need a replacement for porter sooner than later. Terell suggs (no way we can get him), peppers is too expensive, roth is serviceable for now. The draft offers sintim or english at 25. Personally I would love to see us go with english. If we get pressure on the qb, that helps our secondary trmendously.

7. Nose tackle. Ferguson is getting older and solia isn't the answer. Young nose tackles are hard to come by in free agency so the likes of brace, taylor, or a later round pick may be the answer here for depth this year and to groom for the future.

At this point, I think wr is a luxury. They can be boom or bust and we can't afford a bust!

With all of this said, here is my ideal fa and draft. We know parcells won't break the bank in free agency. I would like to see carey and bell resigned. This takes care of 2 positions of need. I would also like to see jason brown of baltimore signed taking care of center and depth at center and guard. If we could get someone like bart scott as well I would be elated!

Draft:
1. English
2a. Delmas
2b. Brace (not sure he will be around, but hopeful)

This would make our roster something like:

Qb: pennington/henne
Rb: brown/williams/cobbs
Fb: polite
Wr1: ginn/bess
Wr2: camarillo/london
Te: fasano/martin
Lt: jake
Lg: smiley/satelle
C: brown/satelle
Rg: thomas
Rt carey

Rde: holliday/merling (maybe just merling if holliday is cut for cap space which has been rumored.
Nt: ferguson/solia/brace
Lde: lanford/starks
Olb: porter/wake
Ilb: scott/torbor
Ilb: ayodele
Olb: english/roth
Cb: allen/thomas
S: bell
S: delmas
Cb: 3rd rounder? Mcfadden?
