If there ever was one single reason to fire Jeff Ireland above all others, it is his inability to address the Free Safety position. Now with Y.Bell gone, we are bereft at both positions, IMO. The guys we have there are mediocre at best, and maybe with experience they could move up to be average. Yeah!
I'm still pissed off about the 2010 draft when they could've had Earl Thomas, who's now a very good player for Seattle. Instead, we have Odrick, who missed his whole rookie year, and Misi, who's extremely mediocre at both run and pass.
Anyone else here miss not having Earl Thomas at Safety? Anyone else not in love with Misi? Odrick is OK, but based on what happened Friday night it's obvious that he's not a factor in creating pressure or sealing the corner.
I honestly thought this team was more talented than it is. They have to be one of the least talented teams in football. Even Dansby is middle-of-the-pack at best. Obviously those D-linemen in AZ should get more credit for his success. I wish we could've traded Dansby, but like someone else said, we overpaid the **** out of him so no one wants him. He's just gonna be here getting old while this team slogs through a long rebuilding process.

I'm glad I don't live in Miami, because I'd never be able to see Dolphin games on TV. What are you lookin' at this year, 65-70% capacity in Sun Life?
Check that: I do wish I lived in Miami. The Dolphins can go blow themselves.

I agree, the starting defense as a whole looked terrible against the Bucs, however they had problems stopping the run and well as the pass. But to be fair it's only the 1st Preseason game, so we'll see how it goes against Carolina.......... The 2's and 3's looked solid against the Bucs 2's and 3's offense.

Don't go off the deep end after 1 preseason game, remember the team will only show basic stuff only during the preseason.

Dolphins games are never blacked out. They always pay and get them televised. I've lived here for over 35 years.

I don't remember seeing another safety as small as Wilson though, but he is new to that spot and I think he will do better.

The REAL problem, is that Sean Smith just isn't good enough and Vontae has not applied himself as he COULD have.

Smith looked EXACTLY like he did all of last season and the prior season in that first preseason game. He was in position to make the play and didn't do it twice, he was in position to make the tackle and didn't get it done.

The only things that come to mind when I think of Sean Smith is a guy who likes to dance before the play and a guy who is real good at expressing disappointment physically with grand gestures AFTER the play that he failed to make. Also, you'd think someone who played WR could actually, you know 'Catch the damn ball'. :d-day:

I'd say to give the defense a chance. At the end of last year they were looking very strong. It's just one preseason game, a lot of teams didnt look good

there were only 2 good safeties in this draft class Mark Barron who went at pick 5 and Harrison Smith who was picked at 29, SO does Ireland get a potential franchise QB or trade back to hopefully pick up Harrison Smith for you? Im not a huge Ireland fan here but he really didnt have too many options this season. Hindsight is 20/20 bud, Earl Thomas himself was a little risky, small hard hitter (bob smith 2.0). I would have liked demaryus thomas, jason piere paul, Jimmy Grahm, Maurkice Pouncey instead of Odrick but it just doesn't work like that.

It will be interesting to see if Jimmy Wilson can use his CB skills (that's being generous) to make FS plays down the field. We can hope. The more these guys struggle, the better draft pick we get for 2013.

don't go trading everybody for one preseason game that they don't even prep for it would be nice if they moved smith to safety where he played in college

Yes! Lets fire Ireland right now after the first pre season game. Great idea, why didn't anyone else think of that?

Clearly, next year's key needs in the draft will be WR and secondary. That was a given already when we shored up the O line, D line, RB, TE and QB spots in this years draft

He played WR before he played corner.

He was PROJECTED as a safety based on his size and body type.

This was a big issue when he was drafted. Most NFL draft guys were saying he was too lanky and tall to be a corner.

I don't know about that, but his disposition doesn't seem right to be a cornerback in the NFL. I would not have him as my starting corner if I were a GM or coach.

I've been preaching this since 2010 after we could have had Earl Thomas instead of softrick and misswho. Ireland screwed the pooch on that one.

If we don't address WR immediately then you are right......we will need a lot of safeties and corners bc the opposing defense is going to stack the line on us since they will have nothing to fear in the passing game. Our D will be on the field so much we will need a whole lot of back ups to sub in constantly.

We need to address WR quick. We have a bunch of decent #2-#3's but how are we going anywhere without a true threat on the field?

here's the thing though, even some of Harrison Smith's biggest supporters said he went about a round and a half too early. I'm not a Notre Dame fan, but I've seen plenty of Harrison Smith over the past couple of years to know that trading up for him would not be wise.

As for our safeties. Reshad Jones looks fine now that he's playing his natural SS position. It is really too bad they insisted on playing him as FS last year, cause I think people really forget what kind of talent Jones has, but playing him at FS took away most of his strengths and magnified all of his weaknesses.

We need to get FS settled. Clemmons and Culver have both proven (in past schemes) that they can be solid FS but spectacular. Jimmy Wilson showed some ability at CB last year, but he has a game suited for safety. Can he start? We don't need an All-Pro. Renaldo Hill wasn't but we did just fine with him at FS because he knew his assignments and he could catch the ball.
