PATRIOTS INTRODUCE NEW ACQUISITIONS

By PAT ENGLAND, FHP (Finheaven Press) Sports Writer
February 18, 2006

After having their Superbowl run cut short by the Denver Broncos, the New England Patriots have already started to find the pieces that they hope will bring them back to their fourth Superbowl in six years.

In his first act as General Manager, Ryan Khuth sent special teams linebacker Monty Beisel and a Third Round draft selection to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for linebacker Ryan Nece.

Monty Beisel was forced to start after injuries decimated the Patriots linebacking corp for most of the season. Prior to his time in New England Beisel was part of the Kansas City Chiefs. Ryan Nece is son of NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott and the Patriots are betting that this pedigree will help anchor the next wave of New England linebackers.

"He's a good kid, and it shows with his contributions in Tampa Bay. Not just on the team but in the community." - Robert Kraft.
Ryan Nece was also named one of Sporting News "Good Guys in Sports" in 2003. During the 2005 campaign he picked up 47 tackles and 24 assissts.

In a homecoming of sorts, Adam Terry the 64th overall pick in last years draft comes over to New England for young safety James Sanders. The 64th pick originally owned by the Patriots was sent to Baltimore for a Third and Sixth rounder.

With the losses of Stephen Neal and Tom Ashworth to free agency a lot is expected of the 6'7 offensive lineman to help keep quarterback Tom Brady protected.

Noted for his punishing blocks Adam Terry is expected to open up the lanes for runningback Corey Dillion next season.

PATRIOTS SAY GOODBYE, ADD FORMER FIRST ROUNDERS

by PAT ENGLAND, FHP Sports Writer
February 23, 2006

The New England Patriots continued their cap purge trading away two key linebackers. Rosevelt Colvin who was a big free agent signing in 2003 has been dealt to the to the Indianapolis Colts for DT Josh Williams and a second round selection in this years draft.

The second linebacker to be sent away is former first round selection Willie McGinest. The Patriots took McGinest 4th overall in the 1994 draft and now 12 years later say goodbye to one of the unquestioned leaders on the Patriots club due to a swelling cap problem. McGinest is second in active sack leaders with 72 only behind former team mate Chad Brown.

In return the Patriots recieve a seventh round pick, the 201st overall and a former first round wide receiver Bryant Johnson from the Arizona Cardinals.

Bryant Johnson has spent the last season behind Aquin Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald but now earns a chance to prove he can be a playmaker. Adding dazzling speed and athleticism to a WR Corp that includes Deion Branch, Bethel Johnson and newly acquired Rashaun Woods, who was brought in for a 5th and 6th round.

Tom Brady will certainly have a lot of speedy weapons that can spread the field and add a new dimension to the offense.

Givens Transitioned and Starks Cut

by PAT ENGLAND, FHP Sports Writer
February 26, 2006

After a number of trades over the last couple weeks the New England Patriots returned their focus on their own club as they designated Wide Receiver David Givens with the Transition tag and will pay their second leading receiver $2.6 million over the coming season.

A former 7th rounder in the 2002 draft, last year Givens caught 59 balls for 738 yards and 2 TDs. In 4 years the Patriots reciever has 158 receptions for 2214 yards and 12 touchdowns in 53 games.

In more cost cutting measures veteran cornerback Duane Starks was released from the team after his lone season with the club. The Patriots had hope Starks would fill the void left by Ty Law.

A former 1st rounder and 10th overall in 1998, Duane Starks helped Baltimore win a Superbowl in 2000.

PATRIOTS WELCOME FIRST WAVE OF FREE AGENT SIGNINGS

by PAT ENGLAND, FHP Sports Writer
March 7, 2006

The New England Patriots set out to make their team better by adding veteran talent at bargain prices, the first to be signed was Linebacker Ronald McKinnon a 10 year veteran who spent last year with the New Orlean Saints racking up 57 solo tackles and 17 assissts. McKinnon best pro year was in 1999 when he established a franchise record for the Arizona Cardinals with 223 tackles (106 solo, 117 assisst) becoming the first Cardinal to surpass 200 tackles.

Along with Ronald McKinnon the Patriots added 5 year veteran Zeke Moreno who spent his first few years with the San Diego Chargers having his best year in 2003 with 79 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 2 force fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. Zeke and Ronald add another pair of Linebackers that will fit into the Patriots 3-4 scheme.

Cornerback has been a problem for the Patriots in the past few years, but addressed their depth by signing another former Charger, Jamar Fletcher. In 13 games for the Chargers last year Fletcher tallied 21 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception.

It was thought that the Patriots may add a Safety through the draft, but New England added to their depth by signing 4 Year veteran Ryan Clark to a $1 Million contract today. The 26 year old Clark spent the last two season with the Washington Redskins and tallied 57 tackles, 3 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles in 13 games last year.

With some injury issues at Defensive End last year the Patriots went after Aaron Kampman who started at the Left Defensive End position for the Green Bay Packers last year, and having a career year with 87 Tackles and 6.5 sacks. Kampman is only 26 years old and will be earning $500,000.00 in the upcoming season.

PATRIOTS SIGN CENTER AND CORNERBACK

by PAT ENGLAND, FHP Sports Writer
March 8, 2006

The New England Patriots already had a lot of depth on their offensive line, but added more with the announcement of signing Trey Teague today who just finished his eigth season in the league last year with the Buffalo Bills, starting all sixteen games at center.

Trey Teague has spent four years with the Denver Broncos and has started 76 games over the last five years, missing only 4 in 2004 due to injury.

After signing Jamar Fletcher a few days ago, the Patriots have now added Renaldo Hill who spent last season with the Oakland Raiders. Hill led all Defensives Backs in Oakland in tackles with 89 last year. It was a career year for Renaldo Hill in his only year as a Raider, he had spent the first four years of his career with the Arizona Cardinals.

"I'm simply amazed at the quality of players we have been able to sign over the last week. I think there has been an emphasis on the big name players and teams like the Patriots are getting steals on players that can start, or just flat out play."

General Manager of the New England Patriots had been quoted as saying, the Patriots aren't done adding just yet, but the question remains who else can they bring in at such bargain prices?

PATRIOTS ADD CANADIAN UNIVERSITY RECORD BREAKER

by PAT ENGLAND, FHP Sports Writer
March 8, 2006

Running Back Jesse Lumsden signed a deal today with the New England Patriots worth the league minimum of $250,000. Lumsden was signed by the Seattle Seahawks before the start of the 2005 season, but was cut and then played in the CFL where he collected 307 rushing yards on 60 carries and 1 rushing TD. He also had 11 receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown for the Hamilton Tiger Cats, who drafted him 6th overall in the 2005 CFL Canadian College Draft.

Turning down a chance to play at Wakeforest, Jesse Lumsden played four years at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario where he broke several school records along with the Hec Creighton trophy for player of the year.

As player of the year, he broke two of CIS’ most prestigious single-season records by rushing for 1816 yards and scoring 21 touchdowns. He also tied a CIS mark with a 108-yard run from scrimmage, and set new OUA career records with 4238 rushing yards and 47 touchdowns.

It is expected that Lumsden will back up Patrick Pass at Fullback in the upcoming season.

JAMAL LEWIS A PATRIOT!

by PAT ENGLAND, FHP Sports Writer
March 8, 2006

Current single game rushing record holder Jamal Lewis joins a team with the man he beat for the record. September 14th, 2003 Jamal Lewis then of the Baltimore Ravens ran for 295 yards against the Cleveland Browns to break Corey Dillon's record of 278 yards rushing which he set in 2000 against the Dever Broncos.

Jamal Lewis struggled last year and was unable to reach the 1000 yard plateu gaining only 906 yards on 269 carries. He rushed for 1006 and 7 touchdowns in 2004. Still he is only 2 years removed from a career season which he set the single game record against the Browns and finished with the second most rush yards in a season with 2,066 yard including 14 touchdowns.

There is now a question of who will start in New England with both Corey Dillon set to make $3 Million and Jamal Lewis set to make $3.5 Million. Many expect Dillon who will be 32 years old this year is expected to be released or traded, paving the way for 27 year old Jamal Lewis to become the featured back for the Patriots.

"There's questions about Jamal Lewis' character, but you can't deny he is a strong runner that can do great things like he proved in Baltimore when they won a Superbowl, not to mention his records."

Owner Robert Kraft is more than happy with the addition to the team and feels the New England Patriots are going to win a fourth Superbowl Championship since 2001.

"I'm ecstatic about the Patriots this year, and no I'm not worried about the issues with Jamal. The critics had some things to say about Corey but he helped us win a Superbowl and I feel the same way about Jamal." - Robert Kraft.

For now the Patriots backfield remains overcrowded heading into the draft, but only time will tell what will happen with Jamal Lewis and Corey Dillon on the same team.

schisno are you a journalism major or a journalist because you write pretty decent articles...hey if you ever need a job you can be the redskins writer in DC

No, afraid I'm not a journalist student but I do tend to write a lot. I wish I could write about a professional sports team as a journalist that would be a dream job indeed. Thanks for the kind words Phin. :D
