If one of your players gets called for an unsportsmanlike penalty after your team just scored a touchdown would you elect to still try and kick the extra point, which would be the same as an 48-yard field goal attempt, or would go for two with a pass play from the 18?

48 yd field goal. Has to be a higher percentage play than a 18 yard goal to go attempt.

Good question though, this will eventually happen during a game.

Excessive celebration after touchdowns seems to be a very big deal now :thanks:

Good question. Certainly depends on the game situation, the opponent and how it's unfolding.

I think with us, and Sturgis, you take a shot at the 2 pt with a healthy Cameron & Parker, the crafty Landry, Jennings and Stills.

I think a personal foul is enforced on the ensuing free kick...not on the extra point.

A personal foul is enforced on the ensuing free kick...not on the extra point. So, question is moot.

I thought the defense could choose to have it enforced on the kickoff or extra point. I thought most teams just elected to have it enforced on the kickoff.

The new extra point rule now declares them as a live play. Game on.

Not the official rule statement but an excerpt about the change.

It's worth noting that teams which line up at the 15-yard line can still score two points if they get into the end zone, whether because they faked it or had to abort the kick attempt. Teams are also allowed to change their mind if penalties occur. If it's an offensive penalty, they can choose to kick the ball from the 20-yard line (in the case of a false start) or the 25-yard line (in the case of holding) for one point. If it's a defensive penalty, they can try a two-point attempt from the 1-yard line.

If we had a good kicker the FG is the logical choice.

With our current situation it's a tough call :idk:

See 14 Section 3 Article 9 Supplemental Note (b). "The succeeding spot for a foul that occurs after a touchdown and before a whistle for a Try is the next kickoff."

The rule book up on the NFL site is from 2013 though...so, the new extra point rules may change this. I don't have a copy of those...

I don't have the new rule changes, but I would take the excerpt above to be in relation to penalties during the kick try itself, and not dead ball penalties after the TD and before the try. I could be wrong though...

So Dr. Phin are we saying if a team is trailing 20-14 and scores on the final play as time expires and is penalized for excessive celebration they still get their regular extra point attempt and in effect go unpenalized for the foul? Not arguing with you, just asking?

The list below, culled from an NFL memo circulated among teams, covers just about every scenario you can think of. It mimics an extra-point attempt by the Packers against the Chicago Bears.

Penalty Scenarios

1. Try from the 15-yard line. Packers line up for kick. Offside called on Bears. Kick is good.

Options:

(a) Try good, enforce offside penalty on kickoff.

(b) Re-try for two points from the 1-yard line.

2. Try from the 15-yard line. Packers line up for kick. Offside called on Bears. Kick is no good.

Options:

(a) Re-kick with snap at 10-yard line.

(b) Re-try for two points from the 1-yard line.

3. Try from the 2-yard line. Packers line up to go for two points. Offside called on defense. Try is no good.

Options:

(a) Re-try for two points from the 1-yard line.

(b) Attempt kick with snap at 10-yard line.

4. Try from the 2-yard line. Packers line up to go for two points. Holding called on offense. Try is good.

Options:

(a) Re-try for two points from the 12-yard line.

(b) Attempt kick with snap at 25-yard line.

5. Try from 15-yard line. Packers line up for kick. Holding called on offense. Try is good.

Options:

(a) Re-try kick with snap at 25-yard line.

(b) Attempt for two points from the 12-yard line.

All those scenarios are for the "TRY"; not "after your team just scored a touchdown." I was looking into that exact situation. If the question was broadened to include "TRY" scenarios, then that would make sense.

Alright, I see your point and I've yet to read anywhere that it's covered. I'm actually going to try something as silly as tweeting Blandino to see if we can get a response and an answer on the matter.

It has to be condensed so:

@DeanBlandino A team scores a TD and is penalized for unsportsmanlike after the play is dead. Is the penalty enforced on the new try or KO?

Does that sound legit? Anyone, please feel free to adjust or critique the wording (140 characters or less).

I sent it and am headed for bed. We'll see if we can get an answer tomorrow. Good discussion, gentlemen.
