If football were a lighter than air craft, the Dolphins would be the Hindenberg. Oh the humanity...

Why on earth would this team stand up at the end of the season and proclaim that this time they are going to make a splash. They are going to get it right and turn this franchise around. And then promptly go out and sign someone who has no experience, and no recognizable accomplishments? What are they thinking??

Of course I have read the fan comments who are supportive, and they point out that Gase worked with Peyton Manning for three years, and Cutler improved under him. I also have read that he is one of the "hot" names. So why do I think this is a disaster? I can explain in a couple of simple points.

  1. The team and many fans are touting him as a QB guru and that he should get Tannehill to the next level. I think when you coach Peyton Manning, you probably get more coaching than you give. He will always make the staff look good. I mean really could someone look like a bad QB guy coaching one of the top 3 QBs of all time? He marginally improved Cutler in Chicago. But overall nothing to be the "Hot Choice".
  2. And what about the rest of the team? The defense and offensive line are in a way worse state than the QB. Where are his credentials to fix these? Hear me say that the growth of Tannehill is not the biggest need of this team. Turning this horrible defense and horrible O Line around. If we had a top 10 defense, and a top 10 O Line to go with Tannehill as he is now, we would be a playoff team and contender.
  3. He brought in a DB Coach to fix the defense who is as inexperienced as he his. Where is the experience? This guy hasn't even a run defense before.
  4. They say they would leave no stone unturned, yet didn't wait to interview David Shula?

Look, I am not disparaging the "potential" of these guys. But if I was going to hire a promising young coach I would have hired Dan Campbell. At least you know in him you have a leader of men and he has the commitment of the players. Now you are going to take all of those men who were playing tug of war and running through walls for Campbell and put in front of them that wobbly, nervous 37 year old guy from the press conference? Oh boy...Gase may have lost the locker room before he stepped into it.

The overall sentiment of the fans and the overall position of this team was that it was time to make a statement and bring in someone who could fix this team. It seems that the powers to be don't want an experienced leader who will tell them what they are doing wrong and how to do things. From this point it looks like Tannenbaum wants someone who won't challenge him. What a shame. Stephen Ross shame on you for blowing it yet again and giving us assurance that we will have nothing but 5 more years of embarrassment.

Happy New Year Matt. And you're right. Tannehill is the least of this team's problems. Forget week 17: just go back 2 seasons to our come from behind victory in Foxboro where RT outdueled Brady in the 2nd half: the difference being he was sacked 2 or 3 times in the first half and upright the second half. At this point in his career, he may be need not necessarily a good OL, but at least a decent one as he's shown in the past, to excel.

So whether it's Gase, or my choice Shanahan who could turn mid round nuggets into 1000 yard rushers, someone needs to make fixing the OL the first ****ing priority before our previously up and coming QB ends up pissing blood for the rest of his life!

Can I be honest? Dan Campbell biggest attribute was that he was the anti Philbin and said things uncensored more than other coaches would. He would of been a PR nightmare if things went south.

But if we are talking about putting guys in the right position and development . . . He was no where near what I wanted in a head coach and you would be forced to bring in two exceptional coordinators to back him. I think that was ultimately his downfall in this race.

After dealing with Sparano and Philbin, I want a guy who can take over a unit of the team if the coordinator just proves incompetence. Gase at least has shown that he can run an offense and bring out good QB play. I think players respond best to a guy with a working plan, more than being a "leader of men" . . . That phrase is over done IMO . . Just put guys in the best position to succeed.

Truth be told, this is a weak year for coaching candidates, a bunch of meh . . Bowles and Quinn were much better candidates last year, but I think with Gase you are at least getting some upside. He may fall flat on his face, but there really wasn't anybody I liked out of who was available . . . I do think we got one of the top three guys available.

You win = you have the players support. You lose = you lose that support. You could have Tom Coughlin, Dan Campbell, John Gruden, Shula...anybody...and if they don't win they're going to lose player support. If Campbell got hired, and lost the first 4 games, the players are going to start to doubt his ability, and it wouldn't help that his X's and O's are poor to say the least. So why not go with someone that is known as an amazing X's and O's guy? That's the biggest thing the Dolphins need in a coach, someone that can put the players in the best position to succeed. Being a rah rah leader is all fine and dandy, but I think players respond to high intellect X's and O's guys the same way they respond to the Dan Campbells of the world.

Simple fact is, neither you or I know how this guy will pan out. I have my doubts, I have some confidence too. He's clearly bright, young and is eager to do a great job.

The difference between you and I is that I'm choosing to sit back, support Gase, have patience and hope to see some signs that the kid moves us in the right direction. Whereas you'd rather chastise and denounce the guy for absolutely no benefit when he has no way of shutting you up for many months.

Let's both hope he shuts you up at the earliest opportunity.

I'm going to go ahead and trust those actually employed by the organization and a part of the NFL with their decision rather than the armchair GMs who have nothing more than opinion to contribute. Myself included.

I'm going to go ahead and let this play out and hope that by this time next year we're all happy with this decision. We weren't the only team after this guy and the general consensus (uneducated Miami fans aside) is that this is a great pickup for us. I hope they're right!

Never played the game. Never been a head coach in any capacity.

The odds of this turning out well aren't good lol.

You're going to trust Mike Tannebaum? Good luck with that, sir.

Because they are very much like you, Predicting a disaster, negating positive statements by NFL professionals in the know without even the slightest bit of evidence showing Gase is an inept and damaging HC....Just like Ross making up the BS as you go

And the point you could accept Campbell after actually seeing his capability for 1/2 season........

You don't no squat.........................................nobody at this time does.........let him do something before crucifying him...unbelievable how shell shocked many of our fans are.....( which isn't hard to understand from this clubs last decade of screw ups..)

Fin-atic echos my sentiments exactly. I think we made a mistake. I hope we didn't put this guy in a position that he is not ready for, it will hurt him too.
It is done. Time will tell.

I agree one hundred percent with your sentiment here and I also agree that I personally stopped reading the OP's post when he said he would have gone Campbell if he were looking for a young coach. That shows me that while he has an opinion like every one of us, it is definitely misguided. Sure Campbell showed some passion and fire, but unlike with Gase, there is a large enough sample of his body of work to conclude that he was in over his head. Look, the fans on this board seem to be jaded because we tried to hire the hot coordinator four years ago and it backfired on us, but believe it or not many teams have taken this approach and have had it work out. Guys like Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh, Mike McCarthy, and Sean Payton were all coordinators that were very successful in their first head coaching gigs. Let's stop pretending as if we know the outcome of this hire because right now none of us have a clue as to what Gase's effect on this team will be.

Well said! I have very good first impression, but I will follow the same approach you articulated. I will support him and see how he performs.

All I know is that my close friend is a Chicago Bears fan and even he said that the hire was a disaster.

I'm extremely confident that Adam Gase will be a much better head coach than Joe Philbin.

Give the guy a chance.
