Anyone know if the Dolphins are one of the 25 teams to use these new "Zero 1" helmets? Curious, especially after Jay Ajayi is finishing up concussion protocol...looks like great technology, a good article and video...

  • The outermost layer deforms like a car bumper, yielding when it's hit and slowing impact forces.
  • Right below that is a second, reflex layer of columns that "bend and eventually buckle upon impact."
  • The third layer is a very thin hard shell that protects against skull fractures.
  • The fourth, innermost layer is the form liner, which conforms to the player's head.

I'm not sure but I have had my eyes on these for awhile as well. Potential for a pretty significant jump in helmet safety. I'm curious to hear/read about results of their use around the NFL after this season.

This looks like a terrific development. Time will tell if it works as expected. Thank you for posting the video. I found it very educational.

Good read/vid, thanks for posting. I think it will be individual choice as to who uses it, but I haven't heard if any Phins are using it.

There is a good chance you'll see some as soon as this year. IF I remember correctly, this is the first year that players will be allowed to wear helmets other than Riddell.

Increased safety is always a good thing.
It doesnt look any larger than the current helmets which look huge on the smaller players

Anything they can do to make the game safer is a benefit. Every year it seems like a new helmet is touted but any improvement really only takes into consideration head to head blows, there isn't much they can do for the head moving violently itself (like whiplash).

I coached Pop Warner for years and they forced us to teach the " Heads Up" tackling method which was one of the worst methods I had ever seen. Pete Carrol's "Hawk" tackling is the best but not really new.

I have long thought that what the league needs to rid itself of is shoulder tackling where the defender comes in like a missile and can protect himself by turning a shoulder but the ball carrier cannot. Every tackle should have an attempt to "Wrap Up". This in my opinion would rid the league of those devastating shots but also improve tackling overall. How do you enforce it? First year, no attempt to wrap, 5 yd penalty, second year 10 yds, third year 15 yds.
